Pt 2-Great ending and final act. One hell of a sales pitch. Definitely worth checking out.
The Manor (2021). Pt 1-A very interesting movie about one creepy old age home. Good premise. A little slow but with a good payoff so stay tuned. I was invested in finding out the mystery of this place. Creepy, tense, exciting and emotional. Good acti
Good acting. Very character focused.
Pt 2-Shades of Final Destination, at least to me. A good mystery and premise here. A bit of a crazy reveal and villain monolog, but it was unique. It kept me watching. Memorable and engrossing. The movie keeps you guessing who the serial killer is. Worth checking out.
Mindhunters (2004). Pt 1-I found this movie by accident and really enjoyed it. Great cast! Good characters even if they are a bit thin. Rape referenced in a character’s backstory. A bit cheesy but a good time was had. A decent slasher. Really gruesome and inventive kills.
Hi everyone. I'm taking a small break but I'll be back here with reviews on December 27th. Happy holidays to all my followers. XOXO -Lexie
Pt 5-We have no idea why the villain is doing all this; in fact he never speaks, which detracts from the film. A horror movie needs a rich villain and aside from one aspect, he’s just some guy.
Pt 4-There’s one scene with an eye getting pierced -- fair warning. Big on the gross factor. Made me really nauseous. Mauricio is a creepy and terrible boss. I was waiting for him to die. The lead was a strong and smart character. An OK film but nothing special.
Pt 3-Bit of an ad for cigarettes in the beginning. Nice touch to include the horoscope for Capricorn. We get to see some of the cheesy horror movie that's playing. Some really gruesome deaths. You might not want to eat while watching.
Pt 2-Ironic that some of the characters were so worried about the projection when the problem tonight will be a killer instead. Good camera work to conceal the identity of the killer until the reveal but it wasn’t necessary since we don’t know that character anyway. Rather meta.
The Last Matinee (2020). Pt 1-I’m all for a retro slasher but this wasn’t what I thought I’d be getting. What an odd cast of characters -- most are not that likable. Good music.
Pt 5-“We’re the new Gods.” Not a fan of the final act at all. It was a quieter movie than I anticipated. Triggers: attempted suicide and dead rabbits.
Pt 4-The “re-birthing” was creepy. I loved the narration that frames the movie, spoken by Chuck Knoah. He has a great voice. Missed opportunity to have a media storm and publishers interested in a Serial Killer self-help guru. Good dialogue for the most part.
Pt 3-The nature therapy was too long. The sound therapy was great. I would love Val as a life coach. :D Help me find my inner killer. “Kill, kill, kill yourself happy,” as a headline for the Morning Globe was a nice touch. Not as bloody or gruesome as I thought it would be.
Pt 2-Lou was a very banal character, purposefully though, but not a great character to watch. Good music. I’m all for poking fun at self-help mentors and bogus therapies but I felt that this could have cut deeper, pun not intended. The pacing was rather slow.
A Serial Killer’s Guide to Life. Pt 1-A serial killer road trip? Sounds fun but it wasn’t as much fun as I thought it would be. Val Stone is a great character -- I just wish we knew more about her.
Pt 3-Intriguing glimpse into this series, but not enough to grab me. Still on the fence about whether to see this one.
Pt 2-It’s only going to get worse after the crash. Dead rabbit. Not really rooting for anyone but I can’t look away. Kind of like a road accident. Big on the mystery and the drama here.
Yellowjackets. Pilot. Pt 1-Good opening scene. Interesting mystery. I’m here for what really happened, and who survives and how. That’s a really intense soccer injury, Yikes. I’m glad I don't play soccer. Oh, the drama. These characters are complete messes from the get-go.
Pt 4-A very circuitous route to the truth. I wish it were more straightforward and less focused on backstory that has no bearing on the mystery. This could have been told a lot better and explained a lot more. Unless you’re really into folk horror, I don’t recommend it.
Pt 3-Trigger warnings: dead rabbit & abortion, teen pregnancy (she's 18), depression, truly terrible parents, one of whom is very abusive and the other, misguided in my opinion. This gets pretty dark and heavy. Bit of a downer. Shades of Picnic at Hanging Rock and Midsommar here.
Pt 2-Too much time is spent trying to figure out what’s really going on when the series should have double downed on the characters. Not to mention that the pacing is very slow.
Equinox. Pt 1-The pilot draws you in, but this folk horror series doesn’t deliver. The ending is crazy and doesn’t make sense because we don’t get to know the characters well enough.
Pt 2-High production values. Some great transitions here. Good colors, and some great camera angles as well. I can’t wait to solve the mystery. A promising start.
Equinox. Pilot. Pt 1-I can see that graduation ceremonies in Denmark are a bit different from graduation in the US. The viewer is presented with a very good mystery that pulls you right in. One very effective jump scare. Spooky and haunting. Gets creepier as the episode goes on.
Pt 5-They didn’t have middle school
competitions in my school either -- only in high school. They should be in high school! Is there any reason for making them middle schoolers even though they clearly should be in high school? This was a very interesting start to the series.
Pt 4-Lexy, is the mean girl? I mean it is not spelled like my name but too close for comfort. 8th grade threw me off since they all look like they’re in high school and I didn’t dissect anything in 8th grade nor was I 14 at the beginning of it.
Pt 3-A bit cliche, not as nuanced as one might like but still an interesting story. Cat death and dissecting a frog who looked like it was breathing there. Yikes. Jake hyperventilates when he sees blood? He’s in trouble now -- he's in a horror TV show.
Pt 2-Jake’s room with a doll's head sculpture was kind of cool. Great title credits. Oh, the family drama. Teasing and bullying a gay teenager by his family and peers? Not to mention an abusive, homophobic dad who always drinks.
Chucky. Pilot. Pt 1-That’s one creepy face. I appreciate this for bringing new life into the story and taking a different direction. Love the voice of Chucky. Like the podcast angle and grooming the teenager to be a killer too. “Some people deserve to die.” Chilling.
Pt 3-The man who is dressed as a pig is in fact a pig -- truth in advertising. He should wear the costume to work the next day. Gotta say, didn’t think the ending was fair nor did I appreciate it but I did enjoy the lead up to it. Good red herring.
Pt 2-Remind me not to work at that company. Some people here really shouldn’t drink -- I’m looking at you, William. He's harassing people, how did the company not fire him? Sending trunk pictures as an elephant?
Bloodride. The Elephant in the Room. Pt 1-I’m here for the mystery. Was it suicide, murder, or an accident? I’m also here for a little inter-office politics. Everything comes out in the wash at an office Christmas party. This is a really intense party.
Pt 2-That house was a kid’s paradise or seemed so. So many toys. What a creepy story. Interesting ending.
Hansel (2020). Directed and written by Vivian Papageorgiou. Pt 1-Good music. I’m all for modern retellings of fairy tales. Good set especially the villain’s house. The retro computer game was a nice touch.
Inferno (2020). Directed and written by Katherine Chediak Putnam. Co-written by Katherine Chediak Putnam. This one draws you in and keeps you close. Good characters. Interesting idea. Odd ending. A bit muddled in the world building and the how of it all.
Pt 3-If you think your family is dysfunctional, check this out. Not sure I’ll watch the rest of the series.
Pt 2-The pacing is very slow. Not much happens in the whole episode. Facts are hinted at but never said outright. Purposely delaying certain truths just to drag out the drama. Not my speed. Moody with a very dark undercurrent.
Post Mortem. No One Dies in Skarnes. Pilot. Pt 1-Dark humor. One hell of an opening couple of scenes before the credits and the theme song. Great theme song by the way. An interesting character study of a Norwegian vampire. Some really shifty characters.
The Cruise (2020). Directed and written by Richard Louprasong. Really loved the urban legend angle here. Good storytelling and music. Good ending. Solid queer horror short.
Dead End Drive (2020). Directed by Alexander Yellen. Zombies are not my fav subject but I enjoyed this one. The ending makes this short! Good acting. Great twist. The moral of this story is always be careful whose house you run into especially during the zombie apocalypse.
Pt 4-Triggers: a deer is killed and its throat is slit and a butcher chops a dead cow or pig. I can’t wait to see the rest of this series.
Pt 3-I enjoyed seeing how entrenched he is in this small town. Glad Debra is back in a way. His girlfriend looks a bit like Debra. Oh, the temptation in this episode.
Pt 2-But this is an interesting story and I’d like to see a sympathetic serial killer raising his teenage son. I wonder if his son has murderous impulses. This episode starts with a new Dexter and a life I didn’t think I’d see him live.
Dexter. New Blood. Pilot. Pt 1-This was a great pilot. It set the scene for the series and drew me in like the original series did. When I first heard that they were bringing Dexter back, I thought they would rewrite that ending or most of it but sadly, that isn’t the case.
Pt 2-Leaves us at a very climatic scene. Definitely piqued my interest. Getting some ET vibes here. I’d definitely watch the rest of the series
Elves (2021). Pt 1-Starts with the murder of a cow. Yikes. Hard to watch an animal be scared and slaughtered. Kind of a trend now to start with animal death. Great. Interesting setting and characters. Suspicious townsfolk. What are they hiding? I’m here for the mystery.
Pt 2-Interesting cast of characters and a good cast. This episode was just laying the groundwork and setting the scene. Character- heavy without the scares. Has potential but didn’t grab me.
Midnight Mass (2021). Pilot. Pt 1-Opens with a drunk driver killing a woman so if that’s a trigger, start the pilot after that point. Good establishing shots of the town. Good sets. Takes a while to set up the story. Strong sense of place. Dead cats, so many dead cats.
Pt 4-Wish we had seen the important letters that prompted his descent into madness. What an intense final act. Wish we had more closure on the box. Ends abruptly.
Pt 3-Needs more backstory here. I didn’t feel the connection between these so-called friends. I felt like I needed their history as friends. Most of the film, we’re just watching
Most of the film, we’re just watching them talk, smoke, and drink beer -- not enough.
Pt 2-Good premise though about finding a box that predicts the future and the death of the main character. Do we make our own fate or is it predetermined? How well do you know your friends? A bit too visually bright in some scenes.
To Freddy (2020). Pt 1-I liked the conversation in the beginning about social media, targeted ads, and how much information companies like Facebook have about us. This movie was a bit slow, possibly too slow.
Pt 5-That creepy monster doesn’t stand a chance. She really fights for that kid! A supernatural monster stands no chance against a mom.
Pt 4-He would rather think she was an abuser than believe her? Where do these strong women find men like this? Came here for horror but got a lot of drama.
Pt 3-That in itself is stressful not to mention any addition of the supernatural. I suppose that situation is rife with horror. But it would be nice to see the stepmom with a bit more resources at her disposal and not quite as alone. Some really tense scenes.
Pt 2-Hard to tell night and day from the lighting. Knocking from inside the wall was effective. A new horror trope seems to be to leave the stepmom in a new house away from friends with no job and having to make a connection to her step-son or daughter.
The Evil Next Door (2021). Pt 1-Intense start. Good music but sounded a little familiar. Slow and atmospheric with jump scares. Like Paranormal Activity, the scenes are broken up by dates. It takes the female lead a while to see something is wrong. Eye roll.
Pt 6-The main character was very bland and basic, and in my opinion, couldn’t carry the show. I did love the pitch that Duke gave about embracing the monstrous feminine.
Pt 5-A bit slow. More of a moody character study than an exciting or particularly scary story. And while the characters, especially the vampires were great, it could have used a bit more oomph.
Pt 4-There was also one character that attempted suicide, and was barely in the story. We just left him like he was forgotten. Attempted suicide as a plot device? Yikes. The lead looked a lot like Elena in Vampire Diaries. It was a bit distracting honestly.
Pt 3-The whole question of whether men can be trusted with power is a good one but I felt like there needed to be more examples of decent men who could handle it. I felt rather bleak without that. All men are the enemy? No. Some men are enemies, yes, but not all.
Pt 2-A lesbian character is so enthralled by a vampire that she wants him? That’s offensive. I’m sorry but no. One character runs away and is an underage prostitute but finds that empowering? Also a misstep. Can you tell this was written by a man?
Bit (2019). Pt 1-Intense beginning. Good dialogue for the most part, but sometimes a tad annoying. I love the idea of a vampire girl gang with all the power. I could’ve done without the rapist, women-hating, male vampire hunters.
Pt 3-Some creepy scenes but mainly a light horror movie. Character driven. More world building would have been good but even so, this was an enjoyable watch. A funnier lighter take on the Host.
Pt 2-Liked that we had constant feedback from the characters, not only on the script that was written, but also when the supernatural elements came into play. And they were saying things that we’d say like: “Get out of the house."
Untitled Horror Movie (2021). Pt 1-This was a fun movie. Very meta and funny with good dialogue and realistic characters. I felt like I was behind the scenes with the actors on the Zoom call myself.
Dead End Drive (2020). Directed by Alexander Yellen. Zombies are not my fav subject but I enjoyed this one. The ending makes this short! Good acting. Great twist. The moral of this story is always be careful whose house you run into especially during the zombie apocalypse.
Pt 5-Tense final act but the barn scene was too shaky to see clearly what was happening. Interesting ending and what it would mean for the world at large.
Pt 4-Dead animals. Sheep murder and the murder of a baby lamb with two heads. Yeah, I don’t know either. Decapitated cows. Good POV cam at times, like when the female lead is lowered into the cave and when the cops come.
Pt 3-It would have been nice to have more scares sprinkled throughout. Once you start to unravel the mystery, you’ll see how punishing the storyline is for women. Men using women’s bodies because they can bear the burden. Yikes. The writers needs to handle his hatred of women.
Pt 2-It moved so slowly and most of the scenes were just "a day in the life of" with a lot of scenes of the characters eating until about the hour mark and it’s just an hour-and-thirty-minute movie. I did like the shift from documentary to ghost hunting as the character put it.
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021). Pt 1-This has an interesting story, at least at the beginning, and a lot of mystery about what’s really happening. Considering the series, this had a better story than usual but it also had the same pitfalls.
Pt 4-Things are left up in the air. I think this could have benefited from a more concrete ending.
Pt 3-I guess I'd better watch out. Good colorization. There’s one really jarring transition here. Quite surreal in some parts, more of a mood and character-focused piece than a plot-driven story. A true descent into madness but it offers no resolution.
Pt 2-Creepy, eerie and surreal. We also get to see snippets of horror movies. Fair warning -- there is a snippet of a rape scene & an attempted rape. The comment about what this type of work leads one to is an interesting question. Considering I watch horror movies all the time,
Censor (2021). Pt 1-I appreciated the talk of violence and the effect of horror movies on the general public. We really see things through the eyes of the main character as she censors horror movies in a toxic male environment. I enjoyed going down the rabbit hole with her.
Pt 8-Good bones of a solid creepy story. Possibly worth checking out if you’re patient.
Pt 7-I do like it that a weak character who relies too much on her husband finally gets the strength she needs. There wasn’t enough of a resolution though. We skipped some steps there at the end. If only this movie had better pacing with a stronger story structure.
Pt 6-Loved the house. Dog abuse and death referenced. Solid final act that brings it all together and will creep you out. Wow, that villain monologue and reveal! You can never really know another person. Not a fan of the slow-mo running.
Pt 5-I’m not a fan of using cancer as character development though. I think there might have been better ways to show how much she relies on him & the problems created by letting someone else rule your life. Good investigation of what really happened. Some great camera angles.
Pt 4-Breast cancer in the past was referenced and I think that was only to reinforce how much the female lead relies on her husband to support her and do everything for her. Literally everything. She can’t even send an evite to a party by herself.
Pt 3-I was expecting a tenser, spookier watch. Good opening scene and dialogue for the most part. Lots of character development, maybe too much, at the expense of a fast-paced plot.
Pt 2-Not to mention that the mystery of what’s really happening is easy to figure out, or at least it was to me. There were some tense scenes but since we didn’t build up to them and the pacing was so slow, they weren’t as impactful as they could have been.
Intrusion (2021). Pt 1-This could have been a tense and spooky story -- given that there was a home invasion and a girl missing -- but this one falls flat. The pacing is way off and the story moves at a snail’s pace.
Pt 3-Overall, this was an interesting and unique movie but not one I’d see again. Way too bleak for my taste.
Pt 2-This is one bleak and depressing movie. I need to watch something happier now. Illness, madness and family bonds. What we do for family. The final battle with the monster could have been stronger. Interesting place to end the movie which leaves things up in the air.
No One Gets Out Alive (2021). Pt 1-I appreciated the character development & the glimpse into the lives of undocumented workers but at the same time, I would have liked more scares throughout. The muted colors worked with the tone of the movie but made everything visually dark.
The Cruise (2020). Directed and written by Richard Louprasong. Really loved the urban legend angle here. Good storytelling and music. Good ending. Solid queer horror short.
Seek (2020). Directed by Aaron Morgan. That is one creepy and disgusting place to use the bathroom. Terrible road trip buddy. Good setting. A creepy and unique and very memorable short. Would love a feature with this idea.
#Nofilter (2021). Directed and written by Nathan Crooker. Good characters and dialogue. Good sets. Gets really creepy. Oh the body horror. Great ending! This was a powerful short!
Room 217 (2021). Directed by Srwsht Abarash. I loved the look of this film. Great cinematography and a great colorist made this pop. But the storytelling could have been better. We didn't even get to see inside room 217.
Pt 4-The end, while good, does leave things a bit unresolved. Not as climatic as it could have been. Thought maybe that's because there will be a sequel?
Pt 3-Liked the cameo guest stars here. Good SFX especially for the deaths of the vampires. A dark story that draws you in. Good shifts tonally throughout, romance included.
Pt 2-Good opening scene. Great female leads. They really bring it and make the movie. Loved Blaire! Memorable characters. Wow. One character was really sadistic. Yikes. Can't trust men to tow the line even in fantasy. They'll always be up for a power grab.
Night Teeth (2021). Pt 1-This was a fun ride and definitely something you should check out if you're looking for a stylish, eye-catching vampire flick. Great sets, colors and cinematography. I liked the narration at the beginning that helps orient the reader into this world.
Pt 3-It cuts right in the middle of a tense confrontation and offers no resolution. Sadly even for the actors named above, this movie isn’t worth checking out.
Pt 2-The whispering and creepy sounds are not scary -- there are no real scary elements here. The story itself as it is, with no worldbuilding, is depressing and very dark. I feel like I need to see something happy now. The ending is a mess.
Dreamkatcher (2020). Pt 1-Interesting look for the house. I checked this out for Lin Shaye & Radha Mitchell but this movie really let me down. The boy was just a frustrating character throughout and, I’m sorry to say, a bad actor. The story is very slow & fails to create tension.
Pt 5-It elevates the entire story and shifts it in a new direction.
Pt 4-The framing in the extended version is great and we get a glimpse into Minos; we're introduced to the character Claire, who I love. The opening scene is so chilling. It’s really something to see! It’s a game changer for the series.
Pt 3-I did guess a lot of the twist and the ending but this was still enjoyable. Now for the extended version, which is much better in my opinion, and that's saying something because I enjoyed the theatrical version a lot.
Pt 2-Edge of my seat the entire time. Interesting sets. Some really emotional deaths that got to me. I liked the mystery of Sonia. Such a great twist at the end. Great final act! Really brought it. The female lead was so strong and clever. What a character! Loved her.
Escape Room 2 (2021). Pt 1-Intense and clever. Good puzzles. Great rooms that were really dark. Good world building especially when the previous champions discuss the themes of their previous escape rooms. Loved the train scene. The bank scene was so tough!
Pt 2-Very suspenseful - I was on the edge of my seat. Creepy and exciting.
Hypnotic (2021). Pt 1-Very distinctive sets and colors. Great cinematography. Still birth referenced. That’s one creepy therapist who doesn’t know the word boundaries. Just goes to show you how much trust and control we give over to therapists.
Pt 4-Aside from those things, this really got my attention.
Pt 3-I did guess the killer early on but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the movie. The ending was a bit abrupt and the villain monologue needed some work. I also wasn’t too keen on using Nazi paraphernalia as drug paraphernalia. That was in bad taste.
Pt 2-What secret is worth dying for? Are you defined by your worst mistake, your most terrible secret or can you become a better person? Great characters, dialogue, and mystery. I’m all for teen slashers.
There’s Someone Inside Your House (2021). Pt 1-This was a good movie for the most part. Totally worth checking out. Creepy, engrossing, interesting, funny, fresh and contemporary with good themes.
Itch (2021). Directed by Matt Cochran. Interesting idea for a cursed item. Creepy monster. I wish we knew more about the item and the monster. Ends in the middle of the story. No real closure. I was drawn in, intrigued by the characters and then it ended. Bummer.
Pt 2-What if our attitudes and deeds were being counted and society was evolving into monsters? That’s an idea! Interesting. This one had something to say. Some creepy body horror here. Solid storytelling. Good execution. Something to see.
Posies (2020). Directed by Katherine Fisher and R. H. Stavis. Written by R. H. Stavis. Pt 1-I liked the comments on the TV that was playing in the background in the beginning. Good music and rich colors. “The devolution of society.” High concept -- political.
Strangers in the Night. Directed by Richard Keith Quintero. Written by Adam Huss. Serial killers during COVID. What a great idea! Tries a bit too hard to be funny in some parts. I like the serial killer death match. What a great ending. Clever.
Pt 2-The moral of this story is be careful who you date on Tinder.
Tinder Tango (2021). Directed,
Strangers in the Night.
Directed, written, produced, edited, colored and starring Cecila Robles. Pt 1-This really got me! Loved this short. Clever and creepy with great characters. OMG those Tinder men at the beginning! Ha! Great pacing and dancing.
I was lucky enough to catch this short again, this year and I loved it just as much as before. This one actually scared me so kudos to @tonymorales88 . This is a director to watch for. I would love to see a feature from this idea. (Abracitos (2020)
Pt 2-Really predatory photographer who gets more intrusive and creepy as the short goes on. She’s touched and posed like a doll and even asked to strip in front of them. Yikes. Slowly mounting tension and one hell of a memorable ending. Something to check out
Display (2021). Directed & written by Zach Goodwin. Pt 1-Starts creepy right off the bat. You have an idea of where this is going but it works because you’re in the know, anxious for how this will play out. Or at least I was. Great characters.
Pt 4-I think this could have been better with a softer touch and not as mean-spirited as it was. Great ending though and a great cast.
Pt 3-I also liked the framing of the virtual reality zombie game. I just wished it had more to do with the main story. My main problem with this story was the relationship between the wife and the husband.
Pt 2-We get to see a lot of Horror Express and a bit of Night of the Living Dead. The male lead, when using the machine, is like us, the viewer, as we watch horror movies being a voyeur, cracking jokes and giving commentary to the scenes. Liked that meta component.
Creepshow S2x05. Pt 1-I love the idea of an immersion pod so that you can go into your favorite movies. The pod design is slightly claustrophobic but I’d be interested in a machine like that. And the movie the character picked is an old movie with Christopher Lee. How fun!
Pt 2-If only the partygoers knew what they were signing.
Second Time (2020). Written and Directed by Rafa Oliverira. Pt 1-Full of unexpected turns. This is a memorable four-minute short about a deaf couple. Good POV sounds from what we hear to what they hear. What looks like a cute couple is hiding one dark secret.
Pt 2-The first twist about who really is doing this is a bit disappointing given the title and what I was expecting. Great ending. An LGBT horror flick. Good music. Slow middle.
Seance (2021). Pt 1-Some great characters, one in particular with a great motivation, and a great second twist even if the movie as a whole is predictable and some of the characters are cliches. We don’t get much info on the characters save for one.
Pt 2-Of breaking out and loving yourself for you and not as an extension of someone else. Good stuff. Powerful ending.
Yandere (2019). Directed by William Laboury. Pt 1-A feminist story centered around the Japanese word “yandere” which translates to “love sick,” think obsession. Good themes of being your own person and not having your entire identity attached to a man.
Pt 3-I liked the glimpse into the art scene in Columbus. Good music. Shades of Single White Female. The movie as a whole is too focused on mood and no enough on an impactful ending. It failed to pack a punch or dig deep enough. Surface level creepy. Fish death, fair warning.
Pt 2-Lennon is a really creepy poser, I’ll give her that, but she barely emotes and has no presence, which I suppose fits with her character, but it’s not easy for the viewer to watch for an entire movie. Her character is grounded so much that I think I could run into her.
Poser (2020). Pt 1-This had some interesting characters and a good idea but the execution could’ve been better. Not really a horror movie, though it was in a horror festival. More like a slow and moody psychological drama.
Pt 2-I was lucky to have seen this for the second time and I highly recommend checking it out.
Waffle (2020). Directed by Carlyn Hudson. Pt 1-Constantly evolving storyline. Good twists. Good concept. Gets pretty creepy. Great characters. Something to see. Memorable. Good ending. This would make an interesting feature.
Pt 5-Had so much potential but without building a strong villain, you’re left with pieces -- good music, good acting, interesting characters but it doesn’t come together without the villain.
Pt 4-Yet this one feeds on joy and innocence. Gulp. Metaphor anyone? Wonderful music! Creepy yet interesting art. The story can be slow and moody and then gradually gets very very creepy. The art gallery scene is one example of that.
Pt 3-Odd villain design but still creepy. Not a fan of the whole child bride in the beginning and the child abuse she suffers with her “husband.” Trigger warning for that! Definite shades of IT here with a monster from childhood that they have to fight again.
Pt 2-Moody and slow with barely any worldbuilding. We don’t know enough about the monster. We get some character development from some jarring scenes between the past and the present. Interesting sets though visually quite dark. It really needed more light.
Achoura (2021). Pt 1-This has to be one of the bleakest horror movies I’ve ever seen. Prepare to be depressed after watching. The ending gutted me. What a Sophie’s Choice at the end. Yikes! There’s a sense of hopelessness that pervades the story.
1-800-D-Direct (2020). Directed by Clare Mcdonald. A raunchy good feminist time with a great concept. Great characters. Good sets and costumes. The boss's delivery was a bit off though. I'm glad I saw this short,
Pt 4-There were some good moments, characters, scenes but there were also some bad moments. And it fluctuated quickly and unexpectedly between good and bad, moment to moment. I was a bit confused several times about what I was watching. There is a scene after the credits.
Pt 3-Some really gruesome imagery here like tearing a baby out of its mother and eating it. Very dark and hopeless. All about the villains. You feel pulled down a dark rabbit hole. Attempted rape of a man by a woman. The movie had real potential here.
Pt 2-As my good friend summed up rather eloquently, “It oscillates between hilariously bad and potentially good." Terrible ending. Interesting female characters but the male characters leave something to be desired.
Two Witches (2021). Pt 1-Creepy scenes from the get-go. Creepy and unintended by the director, quite funny. The movie is confused about its tone so it seems like two different movies superimposed.
Pt 3-Would love to see a feature film of this with a clearer message. Definitely something to see for Dark City fans.
Pt 2-I love the worldbuilding here. Not a fan of how attraction is handled here nor the ending but overall, it was an enjoyable experience living in this world for a bit. This drew me in and held all my attention. Great music.
Mask of the Evil Apparition (2021). Directed and written by Alex Proyas. Pt 1-Shades of Dark City. Enjoyed being submerged in this world and mood. I loved the look of this film. Great cinematography, sets, lighting and great colors. Solid storytelling. Creepy and unsettling.
Pt 3-Who needs monsters when you have humans? Horror that puts a spotlight on real horror and injustices..The ending makes this slow burn worth checking out. A truly horrifying ending.
Pt 2-More like a spooky mystery where you have a few clues but you need the characters to solve it. Great final act.The explanation may feel like it's coming out of left field but it all means something. It's based on true experiences and horrors we’ve seen and done.
Madres (2021). Pt 1-What a start! Interesting premise and characters but plays upon the pregnant woman in jeopardy a bit heavily. Slow. Moody and atmospheric. Another husband who doesn’t believe his wife. I honestly don’t feel the chemistry or the love between them. Not scary.
Pt 4-This movie was not a horror movie but was in a horror film festival, how frustrating. This was an angsty drama. Grumble. The ending was odd.
Pt 3-Shades of The Night (2021) here which also dealt with secrets, cheating and time loops in a hotel and did it better than this movie did. A confusing hodgepodge especially the final act.
Pt 2-The dialogue is at times a bit heavy handed with ominous undertones. The time loop aspect gets a bit old when we aren’t learning anything new. The award for the Most Terrible Boyfriend goes to this guy.
6:45 (2021) Pt 1-What a picturesque island town. Strong sense of place. A very slow character-focused “groundhog day” story about a dysfunctional couple who don’t seem to be all that in love from the get-go. I wasn’t invested in their characters.
Pt 2-Multiple layers here with an unreliable narrator. A full story in a short time. Well told. Drew me in. This would make an interesting feature.
Griffica (2021). Directed and written by C.J. Arellano. Pt 1-For a coffee addict, honestly, you had me at special blend coffee. This was a treat to watch! Good music and narration. Interesting premise, great worldbuilding. He sounded like quite the boyfriend but may be a demon.
Pt 3-Good ending though I wish we saw the fate of one of the characters more clearly. Glad I saw this one.
Pt 2-I liked the audio recording they made of their investigation. Trigger warning: suicide. Lost me a little in the middle as the movie became more surreal. These characters are smart -- they don’t make dumb choices. Interesting premise and worldbuilding.
Night at Eagle Inn (2021). Pt 1-A spooky little story with a bite. A slow reveal of the characters, the place, and why they’re investigating the inn. Good music. The acting of the twins was very believable. Creepy staff and a creepy inn. Remind me not to check in there.
Pt 2-Felt a bit like a monster-of-the-week episode of Supernatural. Interesting worldbuilding. This would make a good feature. Interesting place to end the short. I would love to know more about the reporter and the witch. I liked the phone recordings at the end
Seven Gables (2019). Written and directed by Kellie Cassel Raymo. Pt 1-Clearly made by a genre fan and someone familiar with found footage movies. Good beginning. I liked being pulled into the investigation along with the reporter. The sound is too low in some parts.
Pt 2-He looks a bit like the Babadook and the Slim Man. Good pacing and story structure. Good cast. Oh the cracking bones! A decent movie. Good dialogue. The final battle wasn’t as dramatic as it could’ve been. I wish they had come up with a solid plan sooner. Good ending.
The Crooked Man (2016). Pt 1-This was supposed to be a spin-off of a character from the Conjuring 2. It’s a TV horror movie made by Syfy and it definitely feels like that but it's still a decent horror movie. Good start. Interesting characters and interesting monster.
Dark Passage (2020). Dir./Written by Roshni Bhatia. This was an effective one-minute short. Good idea.
Pt 4-Terrible to be a woman in this movie. So much pain, trauma, abuse, incest, domestic violence, and torture with no meaning, Terrible movie, not worth checking out.
Pt 3-There are limitations to making a movie based solely on dreams with not that much dialogue. The plot and themes have to be clearer otherwise it's just a hodgepodge of images as it is here. Dead wolf. Constant religious imagery that's very threatening.
Pt 2-We start the movie barely knowing anything about the characters or really caring about them and this is a surreal movie focused on dreams so without having compelling characters, it’s a rather arduous journey to the end. Lost in the barrage of images presented here.
Horsehead (2015). Pt 1-A nonsensical, nasty movie that means nothing and was really tough to watch. Not enjoyable at all. There is no resolution, no answers, no real character development.
Pt 4-Kinda frustrated about the ending though. A character breaks his leg pretty conveniently. Disappointing ending that’s also truly horrifying. OMG! I wasn’t prepared for that though I probably should have been. Memorable movie. Good song during the closing credits.
Pt 3-I really liked the male lead; he was a decent guy and fought for his girl. He isn’t a trope and he isn’t always second guessing her. Smart and capable characters for the most part. Good worldbuilding and story. Maybe not a scary story but a well told and interesting one.
Pt 2-You’re privy to what's happening -- it's not a mystery, it's whether or not she’ll get out. Good dialogue and motivations for the characters. Interesting music. Creepy how easily some of the characters can manipulate things.
Alison’s Birthday (1981). Pt 1-A spooky little folk horror movie. A little slow but a good story with interesting characters that draw you in. Good opening scene. If only the lead would have listened to the warning in the ouija/seance scene.
Max & The Monster (2018). Directed and written by Jenna Kanell. That has to be the most obnoxious and distracting monster ever and he snores. About a woman accepting and controlling her inner monsters as she lives with a past trauma. Something to see.
Pt 2-I really liked this introduction to these characters and would love to know more about them. Fair warning -- rape is referenced here. Good music in the end. A bit of a product placement for cigarettes.
Blue Bison (2021). Directed by Camrus Johnson and Stefano Pennisi. Written by Camrus Johnson. Pt 1-This short had something to say. Hi
High concept. Good morality play, characters, and dialogue. An emotional story. Forgiveness, second chances, or vengeance? Great acting and ending.
Pt 3-Gets pretty dark in the final act and a little crazy. It is an 80’s horror movie after all.
Pt 2-There’s a lot of story here. Lots of characters and subplots for the running time so it feels a bit longer than it is. It’s also a bit slow. Just go with it. Good dialogue for the most part, some humor in here.
The Power (1984). Pt 1-A fun retro flick. Not great or mind-blowing but enjo
yable all the same. A good B horror choice. Cheesy, especially the SFX and the body horror. Good music, interesting premise with a small Aztec idol. Great start.
Pt 2-I hear a feature is in the works, exciting. Good ending.
Koreatown Ghost Story (2021). Directed and written by Minsun Park & Teddy Tenenbaum. Pt 1-Great cast, good acting. Creepy premise. “The best husbands are dead husbands.” Love that line. That acupuncture scene was intense! Chilling and memorable.
Pt 2-Shades of The Cask of Amontillado and The Tell-Tale Heart here. I wish it didn’t end right there. It was rather abrupt.
The Psychic (1977). Pt 1-Interesting setting but very slow. The men are constantly telling the female lead to calm down. I wish her character were stronger and the men actually believed her. An interesting mystery. Good music. A very suspenseful final act.
Toast (2021). Dir. Oscar Thorberg. What a fight with that toaster! Good cinematography, good idea, and good music. Great ending. An enjoyable short.
Pt 2-Would love to see this idea expanded. Simple and effective. Good dialogue. Loved the acting -- they really committed. Very memorable. Never pays to be greedy and always read the fine print. What a shattering ending!
Fellow Creatures (2020). Dir. Jamie Glover and Jason Merrells. Pt 1-Written by Jonathan Kerrigan. A very interesting morality play. The story draws you in. Great characters. Good music. What a curious proposition. Love this idea! I wonder where this offer came from.
Pt 4-Spooky things happen like shadows & lights flickering & then weird decay & mold stuff. Odd elements not really bringing the tension home. Dead dog. The idea of taking a spirit & materializing it into the real world is a good idea. If only this movie had a better execution
Pt 3-One character spends the whole movie ignoring the answer when it's clear what he has to do. Why? Good question. I suppose it's to create drama with his girlfriend because they were just too cute. Barely any world building.
Pt 2-More focused on the couple than on the actual supernatural story. Spends too much time setting the scene.
The Apparition (2012). Pt 1-Not worth it even if you’re an Ashley Greene fan. Terrible start. Visually very dark. Hard to even see what’s happening or what “creature/spirit” is attacking, especially in the beginning. Very slow.
Pt 3-We needed an actual explanation here. We got nothing. We’re left to put together the pieces ourselves with barely any clues. Some plot holes here, too. Good final scene though. It is a short movie which for this story works well. But I wouldn’t recommend it.
Pt 2-No one seems trustworthy and they clearly don’t want her there. Her motivation for staying needed to be clearer. Dead rabbit. Yikes. I expected a lot scarier. This is creepy but not scary. Not quite a horror movie. The "why" left something to be desired.
Devil’s Island (2021). Pt 1-The bones of a good story. Strong sense of setting and place. That’s one creepy little island town. Good dialogue for the most part. I was wondering why with everything that happened, she still remained. I would have been out of there.
Pt 4-Watching his life fall apart so quickly was creepy. It shows you how easy it is to take over someone’s life. The ending is worth it but getting there is a trip.
Pt 3-What a way to ruin a bottle of orange juice! The dog was not killed in this movie. Whew! What kind of name is Juicebox for a dog? Unless his master is a vampire -- then it would kind of make sense.
Pt 2-Following him as he lives his life was tough -- waiting for something to happen. I gotta say the ending was a great payoff! Wow! Gruesome but very interesting. I did guess it a mile off. That driver was creepy. Nice shots of the city.
Stalker (2020). Pt 1-A good premise buried in a low-key humdrum slow movie. This guy’s life is pretty banal and boring and he’s a regular Joe. The actor was so lowkey, it was tough to stick with it. For a horror movie, I’d have expected more.
Pt 5-Good final battle and ending. It was a fun movie. Glad I saw it.
Pt 4-This is the time to be Amish until they catch the “ghost.” Why was she driving? The police just start firing? Wow! Exciting with one sadistic SOB as a killer. The characters make some really weird choices here, not logical ones.
Pt 3-Oh those low tech computers and cheesy SFX. The kid and dog are hell horny. This mother needs a better class of dates. Some good technology deaths. Would love to see a reboot of this. Some really tense scenes especially those babysitting scenes. OMG!
Pt 2-Rachel Talalay wrote this, the director and writer of Freddy’s Dead: the Final Nightmare. Good music. Good villain but I would have liked more focus on him with scarier scenes. Rather tame. Feels like a late night made for a TV horror film.
Ghost in the Machine (1993). Pt 1-Definitely a cheesy 90s horror film. Interesting premise and characters though I really disliked the babysitter. Rather tame on the horror. Dog death. Shadows of Lawnmower Man and Ghost in the Machine episode in X-files.
Pt 5-Couldn’t have happened to better people. I liked the final battle. Women can be strong if they work together and the main character found her inner strength. Great outro. Trigger warning: attempted gang rape.
Pt 4-Why was it there except as a constant reminder of the question of strength and the fact that because the lead was a young girl, she had none. That was resolved but I could have done without that focus. I was a fan of several of the kills.
Pt 3-The serial killer’s lair was intense. Did he decorate himself? The dressing room scene was a bit long and dragged the film a bit. Not a fan of the attempted gang rape.
Pt 2-Great comedic moments and physical comedy. Both lead actors did a great job of acting like the other during the body switch. I really loved the side characters. Gruesome deaths. High school was pretty rough in this movie. That teacher was a real misogynist.
Freaky (2020). Pt 1-An interesting premise and an enjoyable movie that would appeal to people who may not love horror. Great for a date night! You’re welcome. Great opening scene. The false wall in the closet was a great hiding spot. Great dialogue and cast.
Pt 4-Interesting visuals for the final battle. Not a movie I’d see again.
Pt 3-I did like the idea of demons feeding off psychological pain. A bridge between the supernatural and the psychological. That is one creepy town -- remind me not to visit. I hope it's not in any guide books. Strong sense of setting.
Pt 2-There wasn’t enough pay off here. And the ending, even the final act, I could see it coming a mile off. Good ideas and premise but not the best execution.
The Old Ways (2020). Pt 1-Interesting at first and really draws you in but in the end it’s all too little too late. The film is depressing, feels much longer than its running time, and is quite gross and torturous. It also is one-noted: all about exorcism and not much else.
Pt 4-Not of the caliber of other James Wan movies. Some really creepy scenes here.Trigger warning for domestic violence, rape reference, pregnancy from rape and multiple miscarriages.
Pt 3-Terrible dialogue and story structure. Good choreography. Overly dramatic in some areas. Some really great suspenseful scenes as well. The music didn’t fit at all here. At odds with what was happening. It was almost comedic, which I think was accidental.
Pt 2-Good SFX too, especially showing the psychic bond. Interesting settings. The plot is bonkers. Terrible grotesque explanation. Almost laughable. So sadistic, cruel, and misogynistic. Drivel. And not in a good way -- in a major eye roll way. Plodding.
Malignant (2021). Pt 1-An intense start. Unrealistic. No logic here anywhere. I have to suspend too much disbelief. Everyone makes stupid choices here, not just women. Equal opportunity stupidity. Good cinematography though it's wasted on this movie.
Pt 5-I liked the psychotic love angel but since the characters were only paper thin, and there was barely a villain monologue, the reveal fell a bit flat. Good ending and an interesting film.
Pt 4-Violent but rather banal deaths, no inventive kills here. Not a fan of the dog getting kicked. He broke a leg! Why did that need to be there?
Pt 3-I understand that this was meant to be comedic so the paper-thin rather cliche characters were supposed to be that way. But I would have liked a bit more development. I liked the slasher element and was waiting for the reveal. Wow, the on-set drama here.
Pt 2-It was odd at first but as the movie went on, I liked the characters reacting to themselves in scenes, like a reality TV show. Good use of songs for comedic timing.
Killer Movie: Director's Cut. Pt 1-Great cast. I really liked the opening credits. The killings start right away. No slow build up. A movie within a movie. Meta.
Pt 5-Not a great movie or a very effective horror movie, but well acted and interesting enough I suppose if you like JDM. An interesting note to end the movie on.
Pt 4-Watching the movie felt like I was taking a theology class. Oh the jump scares. Slow. Didn't grab me. Doubt saves the day…interesting thought.
Pt 3-Intense beginning. I have to say that JDM, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was the reason I checked this out. Kinda felt like a longer episode of SPN, a monster-of-the-week episode. There was an episode about a healer. I liked the theme of giving a voice to the voiceless.
Pt 2-I am reviewing the movie as a whole and how it works or doesn’t as a horror movie. Anything else, would be unfair as a reviewer. I will say it involves something posing as the Virgin Mary but not the Virgin Mary. Clearly that part was missed by reviewers.
The Unholy (2021). Pt 1-Heavy on the religion, low on the horror. Some reviewers didn’t appreciate the sacrilegious view of Mary, which is obvious in the trailer, so I wonder why they watched the movie if they knew that idea bothered them.
Pt 3-The very end, the last scene with their blog, was a nice touch but not enough to save an otherwise bland movie.
Pt 2-Crazy final act. Great acting. Everyone really commits. Dead cat referenced. The pacing is off especially in the final act. A bit meta at the end. No twists, no interesting characters, not much of a mystery. It's all one note.
Super Host (2021). Pt 1-I like the premise of a blogger and a crazy super host. Rebecca is creepy. But the vbloogers aren’t the best characters. I didn’t really like them nor did I care about them. They made some really stupid choices. Osric Chau from SPN is in this.
Pt 4-This was an interesting and exciting watch. Really enjoyed it. Great final battling and ending. Something to watch.
Pt 3-Loved the hammy, creepy acting for the vampires. I liked the Blade reference and learning the vampire rules, some of which were new. Feels a little long because there’s a lot of story here. The vampires are very ruthless. Some great SFX deaths of the vampires.
Pt 2-Deals with real issues amid the supernatural aspects. I’m all for storylines like this. Tony, Gloria and Rita are great characters. One boy was dragged into doing favors for gangbangers. The vampires look like the vamps in Buffy. Good colors.
Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020). Pt 1-What an interesting concept with great characters, good dialogue and a strong sense of setting. I loved the idea of vampires being behind the gentrification of the Bronx and they’re racist vampires who own a real estate company. Very woke.
Pt 3-Not scary in the least, but it was exciting especially at the end. I wouldn’t recommend this one unless you want to do a deep dive for the actors mentioned. A rather forgettable movie.
Pt 2-But having good themes wasn’t enough to save this movie. Good actors, mainly Christina Ricci and Ioan Gruffudd, are wasted in this movie. Dog death and child abuse. Good ending, all things considered, and an interesting twist.
The Gathering (2002). Pt 1-A real snooze fest that falls flat. You could sleep through half of it and still understand what’s happening. Interesting themes of redemption and holding people accountable -- those who watch terrible things happen and do nothing to stop them.
Pt 3-Some crazy motivations for everyone. Slow. Too much story. Possession as well. Glad he could find a paranormal investigator so quickly. Not scary but interesting all things considered. Some difficult deaths to stomach and some really gruesome ones. Wow!
Pt 2-That’s a real hopping health club. Interesting sets and use of color. Felt like I was watching a movie that would play on late night cable. Some odd elements here: “I’m Beta. You’re VHS.” “Carob coffee?” Revenge against a cheating husband? Or something else?
Death Spa (1989). Pt 1-A nasty, intense, bonkers little story that’s saturated with the male gaze and focusing on half naked and naked women’s bodies. Very cheesy, especially the dialogue. Very gory to boot. Off music for a horror flick. Some good dance sequences.
Pt 4-I have to say that the ending was a real letdown. Marty is a good villain.
Pt 3-Cheesy. Visually dark. Some jump scares. Obvious musical cues. Tropes abound here like sex equals death and the African American character being the first to die. 80's cheese. Weak characters. So many chase scenes.
Pt 2-This should be a note to others plan
Pt 4-I have to say that the ending was a real letdown. Marty is a good villain.
Pt 3-Cheesy. Visually dark. Some jump scares. Obvious musical cues. Tropes abound here like sex equals death and the African American character being the first to die. 80's cheese. Weak characters. So many chase scenes.
Pt 2-This should be a note to others planning cruel pranks - pranks kill! The sound is a bit off in some places, sometimes too soft and then very loud. I actually couldn’t wait for them all to die and wow, was it intense, gruesome and a little nauseating when they did die.
Slaughter High (1986). Pt 1-They turned a nice guy into a murderer as one of the characters says in a joke but it’s an interesting idea. The bullying and pranks are hard to watch because it’s so extreme and cruel. So many bullies worked together.
Thanks for the follow @amymcnarrator .I love your narration, gives al the books you read life so I’m humbled that you’re following back. If you like horror, check out my stories under Lexie Carver on Amazon.
Pt 4-Triggers: racism, draft dodging, and torture in an insane asylum.
Pt 3-That has to be the ugliest scarecrow. If you’ve seen uglier, prove it with a pic. The story felt hopeless. The time travel was an odd element. What a sadistic family. An interesting way to end the reign of terror and an interesting place to end the story.
Pt 2-Good world-building but too much of a focus on that and the characters. I liked the premise of “interactive stories” that can kill. Being a writer myself, that really got me —it’s a love story about the power of stories.
Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark. Pt 1-Takes a while for the story to get scary and really, it never does. The kills are just gross. If you’re looking to be nauseated, check it out. If you’re looking to be scared, look elsewhere. I felt immersed in the story.
Pt 3-What an interesting ending for this story and for future stories in the American Horror Story universe.
Pt 2-I wasn’t a fan of Manny though— his character was a bit inconsistent from the beginning to the very end and way too critical of his mother for my taste. I wish we had more character building but there was were too many twists to allow that.
American Horror Stories. Game Over. Pt 1-This one was a very clever addition. It fit in a lot of story that constantly changed. Four parts here in 45 mins. It tied the new series in with the old. Meta with a great premise, the opening scenes and the twists. Didn’t see it coming.
I’m looking for stories more akin to: Cool Air, Pickman’s Model, The Music of Eric Zann & The Terrible Old Man. I welcome audio clips (youtube) or links to the stories you recommend with great narrators. I’ll buckle in now for some good reading/listening. Thanks in advance. Mwah!
Hi lovelies. I have a quick question for everyone. I’m looking for some H.P. Lovecraft recommendations without the intense racism like in Rats in the Walls and The Horror at Red Hook. Here for the horror not for the racism.
Pt 4-Trigger warnings: the same suicide shown over and over again. Because that’s super fun. Cue the sarcasm.
Pt 3-Depressing as a result. Certain scenes shown again at the end to put everything together as if we can’t get this simple story, It isn’t scary, at least to me. More spooky and suspenseful.
Pt 2-It’s an intense battle and sometimes tough to watch with a kid — it goes on for a while. That battle didn’t feel like it was an hour long for the protagonist. The Djinn does not fight fair. Remind me not to make a wish. A very cruel and sadistic undercurrent throughout.
The Djinn (2021). Pt 1-A good premise in part and good world building with the Djinn but I question whether making the main character a child was a good idea. I think it would have been more powerful if the protagonist had been an adult.Pt 6-Jennifer is a cliche without much depth. Bit of a depressing ending. Interesting editing between the sex and violence. A tragic story, more tragic than I wanted, but an interesting one.
Pt 5- Jennifer is too fetishized to be feminist, at least in my book.Really hard to watch the sacrifice scene. A tad long. “Needy” needed to give Chip a better explanation after the night they had. Lying to get with some guy? Not here for the drama.
Pt 4-Jennifer was used by men and then becomes sexualized as a monster attacking men who find her attractive. Her power comes from a male idea of female power and seduction. Power through being sexualized in the male gaze. Add in some lesbian insults and girl-on-girl fighting.
Pt 3-The focus here is different. I like how it was centered around the two girls — the boys are background, almost. Also reminds you of these victims. I loved “Needy” and Colin and Chip.
Pt 2-The dialogue takes a while to get used to. “You’re so salty you’re soy sauce.” That was some fire! Note to self: Don’t let your friend go into a van with strangers. Draws you in and keeps your attention. Some gross moments here. Good cast.
Jennifer’s Body (2009). Pt 1-What a dark beginning! What if the final girl wasn’t to be believed and was thought to be insane? Interesting idea. I like the non-linear storyline. At heart, it’s a story of friendship.
Pt 4-Triggers: Talk of abortions, sex while under the influence of drugs, forced pregnancy if the story told is to be believed, and a quick shot of a dead cat.
Pt 3-The sex was intentionally awkward. Shades of the House of the Devil but less of a pay off here than in that movie. More world building and a villain monologue needed. Instead, we are given pieces to a jigsaw puzzle we have to put together ourselves.
Pt 2-Takes a long time to tell the story and for it to get creepy. It saves all of the horror until the final act when it should have sprinkled it throughout the film. Mostly centers around a weak character who is a bit confusing in her motivations and actions.
Sweet, Sweet Lonely Girl (2016). Pt 1-Interesting premise. The characters were mostly enigmas so that made it tough to care about them. However one character in particular is enticing and lures the viewer in she does the female lead. Very slow.
Pt 2-I liked the songs here. Dead rabbits and mice. Kind of liked the theme of embracing your inner monster. Can we decide who we are or is it in our genes? Good twist. An interesting moody piece. Not a huge fan of the final act. Went out with a whimper not a bang.
Bloodthirsty (2020). Pt 1-Slow and steady wins the race. The manager is next level creepy as he integrates himself into her life and her mind. Haunting atmosphere. Who knew there was a link between lycanthropes and musical ability? Good characters and an interesting premise.
Pt 2-Interesting world building though not a fan of the monster here. Gruesome. What a terrible and cruel ending that really for me negated the whole point of the story. Really hate this kind of storytelling.
American Horror Stories. Feral. Pt 1-Good characters. Good atmosphere of tension throughout. Dead body of a dear shown. Interesting premise. Surprised me in a different way than I thought it would, so kudos to the writers.
Pt 4-Great setting, colors and sets especially the diner and the library. Memorable. Definitely going to rewatch it.
Pt 3-A great compelling story with wonderful characters. It’ll pull you right in. Definitely needs to be seen! Not a horror movie but I really wanted to review this one and shepherd people over to it.
Pt 2-It’s not hard to see the comparison from the assassin world created here, to real life with men wielding power and setting rules. I love the idea of women banding together. I couldn’t stop watching. I was sad when it ended - I wanted more.
Gunpowder Milkshake. Pt 1-Hits all the right notes. Feminist, funny, exciting, amazing choreography, enjoyable story with heart and a hell of a lot of strong women standing up to men who wield all the power in their world. They set the rules.
Pt 5-Terrible ending, guessed it at the beginning. I want the time I spent watching this drivel back. The textbook definition of a dumpster fire is this movie.
Pt 4-Most of the movie is just boring characters investigating an empty hotel and island and one of them bellyaching because she can’t leave her book bag? Triggers: Massive amounts of stupidity and boredom on the viewer’s part and a brief view of a dead coyote body.
Pt 3-Given the story structure and the ending, the movie failed to build up tension or chills. Two gruesome deaths. Worldbuilding was needed.
Pt 2-The lead character was named Lex, probably short for Lexie, so there is that. I did like the Paranormal investigation angle. The explanation of why the characters do or do not believe in ghosts could have been better.
The Resort (2021). Pt 1-No, just no.The opening scene wasn’t promising. The acting and the dialogue need some serious work. We don’t know anything about the characters save for a tiny bit about the lead so I could honestly care less what happened to them.
Pt 3-It was too long and the story structure wasn’t tight. There was too much story that wasn’t integral to the main plot. Good final battle and ending.
Pt 2-Jill Schoelen was great as Christine. Robert England was creepy as usual. I liked the Faustian deal angle and obsession through the ages. Good music. My only problem with the movie was that the middle really dragged and my attention wandered several times.
The Phantom of the Opera (1989). Pt 1-An interesting retelling of Phantom of the Opera by way of a slasher. Gruesome. Some serious body horror & face mutilation in regards to the Phantom. It was kind of like Freddy Krueger was role playing as the Phantom, what a creepy thought.
Pt 3-I really loved Avery’s character and the CSI friends and the lead actors but they were not enough to save the movie; they were just nice touches.
Pt 2-Again, a husband who doesn’t believe his wife when spooky stuff happens.Triggers: Dog death, attempted rape and cheating. The whole movie is saturated with cheating and forgiveness. A bit long for the simple story it wanted to tell.
Aftermath (2021). Pt 1-I really don’t recommend this one. This felt more like a spooky thriller than an actual horror movie. Also it’s very predictable. I guessed it all. I didn’t find this one scary — spooky sure but not scary.
Pt 2-Terrible excuse for a husband. I guessed the twists but they were still good. A very good episode with a hell of a lot of story in one episode. Now that’s an ending! Loved it.
American Horror Stories. Ba’al. Pt 1-Good characters and premise. Great dialogue. This one really got me. Good credits. Creepy. Tragic. Good therapist. Why do the husbands in these kinds of stories never believe their wives? Can we have one where they do?
Pt 2-Good twist on Santa with some new Santa worldbuilding. Gruesome deaths but it took too long for their comeuppance.
American Horror Stories. The Naughty List. Pt 1-I’m all for influencer horror. Such terrible characters that I couldn’t wait for them to be killed -- which is the whole point. A small moral quandary and one terrible choic
A small moral quandary and one terrible choice after another from toxic males.
Pt 4-The film my attention as it went on and the ending could’ve been a lot better.
Pt 3-Bad pacing and story structure with no rich world-building or good characters. Weird possession element in here at the end that I feel didn’t quite fit organically into the story. I was worried the entire time about that baby - did not appreciate the constant stress.
Pt 2-A story of obsession, cheating and one-sided love. To make men commit, you have to put a spell on them? That’s a sad comment. His obsession gets pretty creepy but I mostly just felt sad. It’s a tragic story but not really a scary one and this is supposed to be horror.
Dark Spell (2021). Pt 1-Not what I thought I was getting. The dub is bad, not synched at all, but the voices aren’t terrible. I am morally opposed to dubs but there was no other version available for this movie. I always prefer subtitles.
Pt 3-A very intense doomed exorcism with a child. Fair warning. This is a darker story than the movie. It’s also very slow and takes a while to get to the meat of the story. The “Tubular Bells,” which I always loved from the movie, makes an appearance at the very end.
Pt 2-There were some disgusting scenes, mainly involving crunching bones and dead animals ... fun. *Cue the sarcasm. Geena Davis is in this for some odd reason, so that’s a plus. Good cinematography and an interesting sermon in the beginning. If only the plot wasn’t a letdown.
The Exorcist. Pilot. Pt 1-This could have been a lot better coming from a classic horror movie. I wasn’t drawn in by the themes or the characters. I will say that the ending was interesting but it wasn’t enough to pull me in. The episode wasn’t scary, at least to me.
Pt 3-I also expected better magic tricks since this was about a magician. The kills were interesting and magic related, better than the magic show.
Pt 2-Aside from these two things -- the look and feel of the film and the ending -- the film as a whole could’ve been better. I wasn’t drawn into the movie and it didn’t hold my attention. The story structure was weak and the pacing was off.
Abrakadabra. Pt 1-A Gallo-inspired modern film that looks like it could have been filmed in the 70’s -- so, kudos. The ending is quite interesting though more explanation was needed; some plot holes here.
Pt 4-The villain monologue went on for too long. The story structure isn’t that tight but I have to say the ending was awesome.
Pt 3-I would have expected a novel idea from the writers and the series. I did like the female lead -- she was a tough character. And I also liked that the cast was diverse though it could have been more diverse.
Pt 2-As if he could crack a code and she'd automatically be OK with it. Wow! This one gets pretty gruesome and a little disgusting (think castration.) Turning people into zombies and horror movies that affect the audience is not new to the genre.
American Horror Stories. Drive. Pt 1-This one was rather disappointing and I felt it didn't live up to the name of American Horror Stories. Not a fan of the premise either, which seemed to be to get his high school girlfriend to have sex with him.
Pt 2-Spooky in parts with a very dark story but not scary. Wasn’t a huge fan of either of the women here: the seductress and the damaged wallflower but that didn’t detract too much from the movie. A bit slow but well worth the wait. Memorable movie.
Paranoiac (1963). Pt 1-What an unusual black and white Hammer horror film. I’m glad I got the chance to check it out. Very odd cast of characters each with their own secrets. Good twists though some were predictable. Oliver Reed gave a very chilling performance.
Pt 4-Good dialogue, especially the rally speech. Great ending and final battle! What a ride. Stay for a scene during/after the credits.
Pt 3-I would have liked a longer villain monologue or more on the villain’s character in the past. How the rich stay richer? Passing down the evil. Good villain reveal. I’m happy the final battle in the present was in the mall.
Pt 2-A glimpse at what hysteria, grief, rejection, hatred, homophobia, anger, fear and superstition lead to in a claustrophobic backward town where the goal is to control women. Not a fan of the torturous long drawn out battle in the past.
Fear Street Part 3: 1666. Pt 1-There is a lot of story here but strong storytelling. A bit sad, lots of animal death, children's death and attempted assault.
Pt 2-People should really learn to stay away from that house. I like that this episode took place during Halloween. A wonderful ending. I’m always a sucker for dark psychotic love stories.
American Horror Stories. Ep.2. Pt 1-The story gets even darker, wow! Referenced domestic violence and suicide. That’s a lot of ghosts in one house even if it is big. A very dark and tragic story but also very memorable. Oddly enough, there were some great comedic moments here.
Pt 2-Deals with some pretty intense bullying. Eat your heart out, Carrie. What a place to end the story. I’m definitely checking out episode 2.
American Horror Stories. Pilot. Pt 1-Really interesting characters and premise, gotta say. Good dialogue. I really like the therapist. Clever add-on to the original story. Great pacing. This one gets very dark —slowly though.
Pt 2-Great songs yet again. One song in particular made me think of SPN. Cutting referenced, fair warning. What an ending! Now I’m excited to see Part 3. Worth checking out.
Fear Street Part 2: 1988. Pt 1-This one is better than the 1st movie. This one cut deeper. Interesting premise and characters even if slashers at camp isn’t that novel an idea. Good pacing. Nice Stephen King references and dialogue.
Pt 3-The final scene doesn’t offer much closure. Why would they have made these robots so indestructible? Why no fail safe?
Pt 2-Starts off fun but the kills are not inventive, the robots looks like Daleks and the SFX is beyond cheesy. It’s hard to get into it. The final act was great but it’s a question of holding out to the end.
Chopping Mall (1986). Pt 1-A good idea but not the best execution. The female characters are sometimes clever, but sometimes need to be rescued or spend time freaking out. Horror movie trope rules apply. Sex equals death. Super cheesy.
Pt 5-Overall, it was an interesting movie. For fans of Barbara Crampton, it’s worth checking out.
Pt 4-Was it just because rat rhymes with bat? The ending was weak; while it may have fit for the characters or at least for one of them but it’s a rather weak open-ended ending. There was a stronger more feminist ending that I wish they had taken.
Pt 3-Strong storytelling until the middle. Then it got quite cheesy & lost a lot of its momentum. The pacing suffered as a result. Shades of Nosferatu. Asks the question of what you’re willing to do for love. Not a fan of rat teeth or the connection between the monsters & rats.
Pt 2-I liked the critique of a woman’s life, feeling trapped in domesticity and getting power through being a monster. The monstrous feminine yet again. Freedom from male oppression. I’m all for that theme but I wish it had a stronger message at the end.
Jakob’s Wife (2021) Pt 1-Very character focused and I appreciate that. We get a taste of Anne’s life, who she was before, and all that she gave up to be the wife of a Pastor. Really love Barbara Crampton. Good music.
Pt 3-An interesting premise that needed to be fleshed out. The characters made some odd choices.
Pt 2-Wish we knew why and what was happening. You have to suspend too much disbelief here. Deals with grief and the death of a child. We see dogs die and a dead dog’s body is carried by one of the villains. A disturbing movie.
Koko-di Koko-da. Pt 1-Unsettling from the get-go but altogether a let-down and a confusing mess. Really needed more talk and less show or a least a bare bones explanation. The slow pacing, lingering camera, sparse dialogue and symbolism over world building were all bad choices.
Pt 3-We really see everything through the female lead’s eyes. Shades of Ginger Snaps. Some very intense scenes. Body horror. I love the idea that you can tell a werewolf by their nails. Assault with a fish and suicide warning. What a great ending! Very memorable film.
Pt 2-What a toxic town that chooses to repress powerful women who own their monstrous side. If they would just have left them alone, things would have been fine. But fear does things to people. History has a way of repeating itself.
When Animals Dream (2014). Pt 1-What an interesting take on a werewolf/ coming of age story. Definitely something to see, but do keep in mind that it’s a moody and deep film and not a chilling jumpscare horror flick. The setting is a character itself in here.
Pt 5-I liked the theme of being who you really are but I could have done without the very clear bi-phobia. I’m tired of writers getting it wrong. Sad when you promote your movie as an LGBT horror.
Pt 4-These characters have some crazy plans. The logic is a bit wonky. Gruesome kills. Sucks to be a side character.
Pt 3-The opening credits were good too & helped to create the evidence of a town ripped by murders. For a horror movie, this one sure had a lot of drama. There’s not much character development here— there may be more later, in a future installment, but we barely know them here.
Pt 2-That said, the movie itself was a mess. It felt like pieces stitched together to make a full movie. The tone was all over the place. The pacing and story structure was off. However, the music was good and so was the opening scene.
Fear Street Part 1:1994 (2021). Pt 1-I really wanted to like this movie since I loved Goosebumps and Fear Street as a kid but this didn’t have the same feel nor is a good representation of those books. This could have been called something else entirely.
Pt 3-As for Sarah, I felt like they had no idea what to do with her character. What a cast of villains! Quite meta at times. The pacing was off. Great ending though. Might be worth checking out.
Pt 2-Appreciated the horror critic angle speaking about tropes, horror ideas, and horror logic. Great colors and music. Carrie was a fun character but I wish we had learned more about her and the organization she works for.
Vicious Fun (2020). Pt 1-It was in some ways vicious fun. A rather apt title. Really gruesome - fair warning. I may not rewatch it but it was a unique and interesting ride. Great opening and good misdirect.
Pt 4-I did appreciate the recordings and the pictures of what the real life counterparts looked and sounded like.
Pt 3-One scene that we really needed to see was the main villain knowing the Warrens. How? Where was that conversation? Why are we just told this? All of the dramatic scenes we could have had are just told to us. Ironically, they could have explained a lot more.
Pt 2-I loved the themes and the underlying message here but I question whether it made up for the two hours I spent watching it. The villain was barely explained and there was no world building whatsoever. So many unanswered questions.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Pt 1-That was one intense exorcism in the beginning that set up the movie and, in a way, promised the audience a dramatic story. However, the scares were barely there, and the story was slow and uneventful until a very powerful final act.
Pt 4-If you have any triggers around pregnancy, “reductions,” or still births, walk away now. I feel cheated out of the movie I thought I was getting.
Pt 3-But the story itself, which is some ways IS the movie, was terrible and not worth seeing. Seriously, run now. It was a depressing watch and the ending is truly cruel, horrifying and gut
Pt 4-If you have any triggers around pregnancy, “reductions,” or still births, walk away now. I feel cheated out of the movie I thought I was getting.
Pt 3-But the story itself, which is some ways IS the movie, was terrible and not worth seeing. Seriously, run now. It was a depressing watch and the ending is truly cruel, horrifying and gut-wrenching. Not what I signed up for and I don’t appreciate it.
Pt 2-We really got into Lucy’s head & stayed there. The horror comes from the fact that Lucy controls nothing about her pregnancy or her own body. I felt like I was inside Lucy’s mind. The music was good & the creepy visuals helped to create an atmosphere of constant dread.
False Positive (2021). Pt 1-Not the best title for this movie. I was curious about a horror movie centered on fertility and pregnancy. There aren’t many but sadly this was a bit disappointing overall though it did get some things right.
Pt 3- A good final act. Strong female lead. I wish we could have seen the husband apologize for what he thought was happening and for not being supportive.
Pt 2-Those were some sharp crunching sounds. The world building could have been better. Good music to keep the moody atmosphere going. Goes to some dark places. Like Paranormal Activity, it frames the story through dates. It’s fairly slow & moody but it picks up towards the end.
The Evil Next Door (2021) Pt 1-I’m all for Swedish horror flicks and this was pretty good. It was a lot more emotional than I thought it would be. Sadly though, while we have an interesting and definitely creepy villain, we know barely anything about the villain.
Pt 5-I assume we can expect a sequel about victims of cigarettes made by the people who made a movie around the Winchester rifles?
Pt 4-There were some creepy scenes and elements here but generally I found it quite banal. The twist was obvious at least to me. I knew what this movie was early on. Trigger warning for suicide.
Pt 3-It would have been better to give us the answer sooner than it did. The movie is as chaotic as the house. I did love taking a tour of the house. What an interesting construction! Amazing set and cinematography. Hello jump scares!
Pt 2-This movie takes a long time to really get its bearings. It’s too concerned about setting the scene. Too moody and slow when it should have dug deep and really built up tension. It dithered around with whether it was a supernatural movie or a movie about mental illness.
Winchester (2018). Pt 1-I finally saw this one and I have to say, while the idea is a good one, the execution really leaves something to be desired. The story while powerful is filled with sadness and guilt so get ready to be depressed about the victims of the Winchester rifle.
Pt 3-His oversight about his new identity is odd. I thought he was smarter than that. What an intense ending! This guy needs some serious therapy! Someone call Hannibal.
Pt 2-If you’re a fan, you should see both films. This one has Meg Foster in it which was a treat. Cheesy, yes, especially the dialogue. Takes a while for him to go full crazy. The story structure isn’t tight. Slow. I like that it’s the small things that get him.
Stepfather 2 (1989). Pt 1-Opens with a flashback to the ending of the first movie. This was a good sequel but not as good as the original. Terry O’Quinn is up to his same tricks. He’s wonderfully creepy in this one as he was in the original.
Pt 4-Barbara Crampton was great as always but I don’t know whether it’s worth checking out just for her.
Pt 3-It is based on H.P. Lovecraft’s ideas and not really on folklore as far as I know. Good music but it’s overpowering at times. Some of the dialogue is garbled. The twist is OK but obvious.
Pt 2-The movie fall flat especially the ending. It literally just ends. I would have liked to spend more time getting to know the town and the people who lived there as opposed to getting to know the couple and a little of the town.I have no idea why this was set in Norway.
Sacrifice (2020). Pt 1-I was worried when watching because pregnant women and horror movies didn’t mix well. That being said, I was expecting a darker movie. This was creepy but surface level, very slow with no payoff, odd dialogue and misogynistic undertones.
Pt 3-What a gruesome, sadistic final act using women as pawns on a chess game between two men. Yikes. It was an interesting movie until the final act.
Pt 2-Takes a while to get going and when it does, it goes off the rails. Not a great plot overall. Little too long for just a simple story but its more of an experience. Not a fan of cheating and this had lots of it. Great acting.
Pathology (2008). Pt 1-Oh man, is this a twisted and dark movie! Not exactly a fun watch. This is a dark exploration in a twisted mindscape. Interesting damaged characters of a narrative that keeps changing. After watching this, you may want to see something happier.
Pt 3-I’d love to take a class from Will. He seems like an interesting professor. The Evil Minds Research museum isn’t a bad name. Good music. I love all of Will’s dogs. Good sets. I like the idea of Hannibal working for the FBi.
Pt 2-Gruesome stories and we do see Hannibal be a cannibal, fair warning. I’m not squeamish so I was fine with it. The food looked delicious, just saying. Great retelling of the story. I liked seeing Will reenact the crime scene in his head.
Hannibal. Pilot. Pt 1-If you haven’t watched this series, you should. A dark, interesting, engrossing, & complex series. Fantastic acting from the entire cast. Everyone really commits to their roles. Great chemistry between Will & Hannibal. Mads Mikkelsen is perfect as Hannibal.
Pt 4-Reading up on the series, after seeing this, it seems like assault and rape is a consistent theme. Feeding into rape culture is not my cup of tea.
Pt 3-There could have been a home invasion, she could have had a broken arm, he could tried to burn down the motel. A traumatic experience ending in a murder could have been done in a less controversial manner.
Pt 2-This may be an unpopular opinion but this is my take on it.They lost me with the graphic rape scene. It feels exploitative and just shorthand character motivation for both Norman and his mother.
Bates Motel. Pilot. Pt 1-An interesting retelling of the characters with great performances. I liked the character of Emma as well. Good exploration of family dynamics, really creepy but sadly, not for me. It may be for you.
Pt 4-The final act really let me down. I was expecting more crazy, a much more monstrous ending. It ended with a whimper and not a bang. No real payoff. I caught this in the Tribeca Film Festival.
Pt 3-I wish we could have heard more of her sets. The film suffers a bit from being too character-focused with not enough plot. Too slow. We see things from her POV but she doesn’t tell us what she’s thinking. She hardly has any friends to confide in.
Pt 2-She’s seen through mirrors or reflections, or framed in the scene or in half of the screen and not in the center, or we see parts of her, all which work to create an uneasy atmosphere for the viewer and we share in the character’s skewed world.
Shapeless (2021). Pt 1-A slow, moody and creepy body horror flick. Creepy music. Camerawork and cinematography helps to make you feel uneasy and really see the world through the eyes of the protagonist. Something to watch just for that.
Pt 5-If you just want to see things destroyed, jonesing for some action with a little spookiness, this isn’t bad but if you require more from your movies, look elsewhere.
Pt 4-There’s a lot here that’s unexplained like the connection between The Janitor’s alarm and that drink. Good ending but it leaves something to be desired.
Pt 3-But it didn’t make me connect or feel for any of the characters. There were flashing lights here if that’a a trigger for anyone. High body count. The fight scenes were pretty good but that’s mainly due to some jazzed up camera work.
Pt 2-He could have actually helped out the other kids and not just Liv. Why help her? Who is he to her? The female lead, Liv, is quite brave, but I wish she were a better fighter. No character development here but we do get world-building — that’s something, I suppose.
Willy’s Wonderland (2021). Pt 1-Given the many similarities to Five Nights at Freddy’s, it’s a wonder this film got made. We know nothing about The Janitor and Nicholas Cage doesn’t say anything here. Is he a mute? Why? Gotta say, not hearing him utter one word gets old.
Pt 2-Full of cliches. Takes a while for the lead to figure out what’s happening. A bit slow in some parts. Stellan Skarsgard was next level creepy. This was a creepy movie with a realistic baddie. Not a bad choice for movie night.
The Glass House (2001). Pt 1-I liked the start of this movie where the main character and her friends are watching a horror flick. The lead was a great character. Good music. I have to say that nothing about this movie was unpredictable. I knew exactly what was going to happen.
Pt 3-Dark storyline but the music doesn’t match nor does the tone which is indirect and doesn’t allow us to experience things for ourselves. Not enough world building. Hints of something bigger. Only the bones of a good movie. I’d definitely give this one a miss.
Pt 2-This is a movie after all and not a book. It’s all just cruel, sadistic games. Death of a child, fair warning. An interesting ending but not the movie I thought I was getting by a long shot. The tone and music are off. It’s as if the movie is in conflict with itself.
Broil (2020). Pt 1-Interesting characters though there’s no depth there. For this movie to have cut deep, we needed to be pulled a lot closer to this family and their inner workings. We, as the audience, needed to experience things along with the characters. Show don’t tell.
Pt 2-Be patient with this film. Good music and an interesting setting. I much prefer the subtitles but Netflix wrongly assumed that I wanted the dubbed version. I only heard it for a minute but it isn’t good dubbing. A good movie to watch with friends.
The Strange House (2020). Pt 2-Spooky and haunting but not exactly scary. Rather tame. A good, sad mystery. I did enjoy watching the kids figure it all out and the supernatural elements here. A bit slow, saturated with character development but the final act made up for it all.
Pt 5-The villain wears a surgical mask and breathes like Darth Vader ... really? After the final battle, the film ends rather abruptly. No real resolution with the hospital staff or the other character left on the table.
Pt 4-The female lead doesn’t have much agency at least in the beginning and in the middle, she just goes with the flow. She doesn’t make a fuss or refuse to do what the doctors tell her without explaining why or what she has.
Pt 3-Good idea. High body count. Sadly, though, the pacing is all off including the kills. Someone could walk into a room and the killer takes his time to appear and kill the character.
Pt 2-Wow, remind me never to go there for anything. Her ex-husband is a piece of work! What should have been a normal checkup turns into a nightmare. The red tape, not telling us anything and how intense that hospital visit became reminds me a little of a Kafka-like story.
X-ray (1981). Pt 1-I like retro horror and the idea sounded great but the execution needs some work. Creepy beginning. Reminds me of the killer in Valentine. Let me just start by saying that that hospital is one creepy place! High level creep factor.
Pt 2-A bit slow but there are a lot of subplots here. High body count. Not all that bloody — straight-razor slashing. Good music. That’s one twisted brother/sister relationship for sure! Wow! Child abuse and rape referenced but thankfully not shown. Worth checking out.
Party Line (1988). Pt 1-An 80’s B-horror movie that was a lot of fun to watch! I went along for the ride and really enjoyed it. A blend between a slasher and an erotic thriller. Love the 80’s outfits and the chilling villains here. Exciting in some parts.
Pt 3-Trying hard not to spoil everything. A twist you’ll never see coming. Check it out.
Pt 2-Watch carefully for clues. She was one strong woman! A chilling twist and a chilling set of sadistic challenges. I would argue that this is a twist on “domestic horror” and the horror is psychological. A mother’s worst nightmare. No way out. Unusual & with shades of Sleuth.
The Caller (1987). Pt 1-There are only two actors in the movie and these two actors make the movie! In fact, they are the movie. Something to watch for sure. Interesting story that pulls you in and makes you desperate to find out what’s really happening & who’s telling the truth.
Pt 4-The villain monologue doesn’t fit with the rest of the movie and we needed to see evidence of what the villain said he had done all along. The final battle was more gruesome than I thought. The movie was a bit unsure about what it wanted to be.
Pt 3-It was a bit painful as you see the main character trying to convince everyone of her
Pt 4-The villain monologue doesn’t fit with the rest of the movie and we needed to see evidence of what the villain said he had done all along. The final battle was more gruesome than I thought. The movie was a bit unsure about what it wanted to be.
Pt 3-It was a bit painful as you see the main character trying to convince everyone of her mental state. There’s a real sad undercurrent here that feels a bit punishing towards one character who happened to cheat.
Pt 2- Good cast, music, cinematography, colors and characters. But one character just didn’t work; all the others were great. The movie really captured the anxiety the main character felt. A cat is injured in one scene but lives.
The Woman in the Window (2021). Pt 1-Creepier than I would have thought but a somewhat predictable story. It was a real roller coaster ride with one hell of a performance from Amy Adams! Shades of Rear Window and Columbus Circle. Things are clearly not what they seem. A bit slow.
Pt 2-Too much investigating and talking and not enough time spent on actual scares. Very slow. This didn’t add anything to the world created in the 1st movie. I will say that the final battle was interesting.
Ringu 2. Pt 1-I expected better. This was an odd sequel with possession, evil kids, and “eliminating the energy of fear.” Good to know that fear has an energy that can be released. The pseudoscience was frustrating as were the characters
Pt 5-It was sometimes hard to tell what it was depicting -- some psychic!
Pt 4-Again, not sure why we couldn’t just focus more on the murder and then have time for an actual explanation. The drawings, which were crucial to the story, could have been clearer and more detailed. As it stood, they were just a bunch of charcoal lines.
Pt 3-Too focused on romance with too many different storylines and characters for such a simple murder case. The lead, Verna, is such a weak character and the men in her life all have designs on her.
Pt 2-One could have gone in so many different directions with “The Handcuff Killer,” like making the killer a woman or making it a revenge story. One didn’t have to make it a cheap and tawdry tale. Rape warning here. Referenced and shown. The story moves very slowly.
The Killing Hour/The Clairvoyant (1982). Pt 1-I feel duped by this one. I was drawn in by some good music and an interesting murder case but let down by the hurried explanation in the last few minutes of the film and the nature of the crime. Such wasted potential here.
Pt 3-Though I know it was all for a bigger point and part of the general themes, less would have been better. Good ending. Unique film. Interesting experience.
Pt 2-It was quite a ride watching this flick. There was one scene in particular that was tough to watch and as a whole the sexism and homophobia was a lot, too much really.
Malice in Wonderland. Pt 1-I really like that title. Great characters and I love the design and look of Wonderland. Exciting, creepy and threatening. Not a place any woman would want to be without friends. Interesting reinterpretation of Wonderland.
Pt 3-Not all the lines here are winners. A bit funny, though I’m not sure that it was intentional.
Pt 2-It was a Wes Craven film so it has that going for it. Great cast. I found it endearing that Mary, not Mina, works at Virgin Records. Remember that? Nice touch to have Dracula understand the modern world through music and music videos. Great suspenseful scenes.
Dracula (2000). Pt 1-Well, this was a creative interpretation of Dracula. I was all for Gerard Butler as Dracula but the story is a tad convoluted. Not a fan of the overly religious tone here and the rewriting of Dracula through that lens.
Pt 2-Good fight scenes. Overall, a fun movie. Great ending!
Zombieland: Double Tap. Pt 1- Really great world building! Good use of narration. Loved the main characters. Was not a fan of the extensive drama between the two women and the two men. Too much jealousy and exes bs, that was too much of the film instead of just a scene or two.
Pt 4-Wasn’t an enjoyable movie and I didn’t appreciate the attempts at humor either.
Pt 3-Cat and dog death and in the case of the dog, we see his corpse several times. Animals lovers may want to avoid this one. I did like the irony of a psychotic plushie being afraid of a horror movie. But that one detail wasn’t enough to save it — nothing was.
Pt 2-Every character was terrible. I didn’t care about any of them. For such a cheesy movie, I wasn’t prepared for how gruesome and bloody it was. That opening scene…wow!
Benny Loves You. Pt 1-Love was not what I felt. I wanted to love this movie and I do love cheesy movies, but this was just too cheesy. Cheesy bad, not endearing. The movie was slow and meandering with no real story structure. The ending went off the rails.
Pt 2-I gotta say though, the men in Anna’s life need an upgrade. Find a better class of men, girl! It’s a game that’s definitely worth checking out. I played multiple times to try to save everyone.
SIMULACRA. Pt 1-Wow, is this a game! It will keep you enthralled until the end! It’s pretty scary and really pulls you in. The gameplay of exploring someone’s phone is very realistic. Anna’s life is very complex and the villain is creepy AF.
Pt 3-The movie didn’t feel cohesive — there were too many different elements. More world building was needed. Too much show and not enough explanation. I did like the poetry. That was a great touch.
Pt 2-Odd dialogue, the foley is too loud, the music is overbearing, the lighting is off, the transitions are clunky, and there is no tone here and no build up of tension. We’re constantly trying to get our bearings.
Neverlake. Pt 1-Right off the bat…not a great title. One should never go to that lake, that’s for sure. This is a hell of a lot darker than it seems —sadistic and grim. Forced pregnancy and rape inferred. Yikes. A lot doesn’t work here.
Pt 4-Was it all at the beginning to cover what this was really about? As I said before, everything was either too much or too little.
Pt 3-Too long even at 1hr and 19 mins. The acting is very uneven and the story doesn’t hang together. So many plot holes — like a slice of Swiss cheese. Torture and murder to pregnant women? Really? And that’s funny? Where’s the supposed comedy here?
Pt 2-Psychosis does not a horror movie make. This needed more horror and less talking. This is the diatribe of a man-child who hates commitment. The one-upmanship got old real fast. Nothing about this was a twist. I saw everything coming a mile off.
It Cuts Deep (2020).Pt 1-Actually, this film is pretty superficial; it doesn't cut deep. I wish it did, but everything is either too much or too little. I wanted to like this — I was drawn in by the psychosis, thinking it would be very creepy & suspenseful but it disappointed me.
Pt 4-Since it was claustrophobically, mainly in the sound studio, you like the characters had no escape from the work they were doing. The ending was anticlimactic. Not a movie I’d recommend
Pt 3-It’s a terrible toxic work environment but it’s also a mindcupe I’d rather not be in. Sad how that environment can corrupt others. It’s a bit meta and life imitates art to some extent.
Pt 2-Was it to comedy or is it using women as well? The audio was mainly or screams or sounds of torture and death. Santini and all the men here abuse women, in the case of Santini it’s implied rape, and then throw them away. They berate them on set and even torture them.
Berberian Sound Studio. Pt 1-A different kind of horror movie. This was way too slow. I understand what the director wanted to say but it could have benefit from a richer story & not hitting us over the head with the point. Couldn’t get past the terrible treatment of women here.
Pt 2-An interesting premise helped by Ray Wise and Adam Green. A bit slow in some parts. Good creepy ending. Not a film I’d rewatch but it was an interesting film.
Digging Up The Marrow (2014). Pt 1-I really love the documentary style & the opening scene which analyzes our love for horror & monsters. This felt more real than other found footage films, I think in part because of the interviews and scenes with directors in the horror genre.
Pt 3-Leaves some things unanswered, no world building and the film ends rather anticlimactically. Not at all the movie I thought I was getting.
Pt 2-There are creepy elements here but it’s more of a moody meditation on letting go and forgiving yourself. Such a tragic and painful trauma that the damaged writer had to deal with. Trigger: domestic violence. I wanted to see this for Katharine Isabelle.
The Green Sea. Pt 1-This movie suffered too much from a singular focus on one character. While I did appreciate that focus, the plot is non existent. Foley is too loud and overpowering.
I hope all my US followers had a good Mother’s Day. Much love to all the mothers out there. Women are an amazing, strong force in the universe and mothers are a special blend of awesome.
Saint Maud. Pt 2-Creepy final act. OMG, that ending. I’m still shook.
Saint Maud (2019). Pt 1-Creepy and unsettling and it only gets creepier as it goes along. Unique. What a chilling and complete character analysis of Maud and how she sees the world. I hope I never meet her. Good music. Strong direction.
The Vigil (2019). An interesting and unique premise but the creepy scenes didn’t go deep enough. I would have liked more world building. Very trauma focused. Dead child. This one didn’t grab me. The ending was very anticlimactic and a bit of a let down
Pt 3-I understood the themes and what the director was trying to say but I think a clearer explanation was needed and not a symbolic ending. I also would have liked more world building.
Pt 2-Great music and sets. Triggers: Cat death and flashing lights. The baby is OK. The ending was a bit muddled. The final act wasn’t as strong as the rest of the movie. Not a fan of one of the secrets here.
The Night (2020). Pt 1-What a dark, heavy, haunting unsettling and complex Iranian horror movie centered around secrets. Interesting exploration of the concept of accepting your demons. This one really got to me. My eyes were glued to the screen. I’m glad I saw it. Scary.
Pt 4-Gruesome for the sake of gruesome. I suppose if you have no real story, you have to resort to that. Cruel story. Don’t recommend watching.
Pt 3-The representation of women here was horrible and offensive aside from the female lead. I wonder if the reference to the Three Mothers is a nod to Dario Argento. No attempt to save the possess
No attempt to save the possessed, just beat ‘em up. Good mentality.
Pt 2-Terribly painful cheesy not fun-retro-cheesy which is what I assume they were going for. Child death and dog death both not appreciated. Gruesome, dark and not fun in the least. Attempts at humor that like everything else falls flat Terrible characters aside from the lead.
The Night Sitter (2018). Pt 1-Aside from one strong female lead, a good ending, great music & cinematography the movie falls flat. Stylish with no substance. Terrible worldbuilding. This movie moved at a snail’s pace and it’s only 1 hour and 28 minutes. It felt like three hours.
Pt 4-What a grim and bleak story. Depressing. The moral of this story is -- don’t go to abandoned temples in Japan, I suppose. The twist was obvious.
Pt 3-Too little, too late when it really starts to get creepy. Interesting look for the Kitsune. It’s different from the one in SPN. The final act is way too dark to see much of the creepy details of the tunnel, which could have heightened the scares. Muddled ending.
Pt 2-I couldn’t focus, I was too frustrated with all of them. Instead of having them exploring for most of the film, why not actually deliver on scares. Most of the creepiness is just a being walking in and out of frame or standing behind people.
Temple (2017). Pt 1-What a mess of a film! These characters make no sense. They barely talk about anything important. He cheats on her and then flies off the rails with jealousy leaving her pregnant and stranded. Terrible characters that detract from the story.
Pt 5-She also makes a big change in her life, which I felt was slightly out of character, but he doesn’t have to change, not really. While I love the ending, I don’t feel the characters earned it.
Pt 4-Things are fixed too easily and too quickly in the end. A whole subplot of why he was a thief was overlooked. Instead of them teaming up to handle his problems, things are just handled.
Pt 3-This grabbed my attention & kept it until the too-long-for-its-own-good battle. Love the satire but as the movie goes along, it gets a little tiresome because as much as I love the female lead, the focus should have been on the plot and not on one-liners and funny anecdotes.
Pt 2-Who says you can’t kill people and look good? Stylish, funny, sexy, Dexter like? Yes! The dance numbers were odd but worked for the most part. I loved the aesthetic, the mood, the energy and most of the dialogue.
Me You Madness (2021). Pt 1-I liked a lot of this but not everything. I did like the references to American Psycho and a strong female lead who’s a CEO, a serial killer and bisexual. I welcome more storylines with those aspects. I appreciated her fashion sense.
Pt 3-We also didn’t get much on the creature. It feels unfinished like a part 1 of a 2-part movie. Good set up but the ending falls flat.
Pt 2-A little slow but felt realistic. OMG that last scene with her eyes. Yikes! What a way to end it. Felt a bit disappointed that we didn’t get more substantial footage showing us it was real. Could have used more action, less talk.
Butterfly Kisses (2018). Pt 1-Good intro and an interesting premise for a found footage horror flick. I like the mythos of the Blinkman. I liked the interviews for both the film within the film and Gavin’s film. Interesting analysis of the found footage film and Gavin.
Pt 5-If so, I understand exactly what the director was going for and I appreciate the journey this film took us on. And if not, that was a wasted potential.
Pt 4-Ambitious use of Carl Jung. In fact, I question whether this entire film is just a literal example of Carl Jung’s major archetypes: the persona, shadow, anima and animus and self.
Pt 3-Very surreal and not plot or character focused. Not enough narrative story structure for things to hang together.
Pt 2-Strange characters that aren’t really fleshed out. Distinctive style with muted colors and interesting sets. “A haunting sadness” was used to describe a Philip K. Dick book in the world of the film and a haunting sadness describes the film itself very well.
Come True (2021). Pt 1-Good music. Interesting start but a bit of a confusing movie overall. Felt like Inception to me. Twist after twist that will leave you wondering what really happened. So if that’s not your type of movie, walk away now. Creepy, moody atmosphere.
Pt 4-They barely describe what’s happening. There’s no wrap up at the end and the ending itself is abrupt. It just ends. The story is creepy, unsettling and grim. Chilling final act.
Pt 3-Pacing was OK, but on some of the days, they brought up some interesting tidbits and then immediately skipped to the next day. Lots of interesting discussions were tabled.
Pt 2-There is a cat here, but I am happy to say that the supernatural peeps could care less -- he makes it. Whew! Bold choice to start with kidnapping an infant.
Paranormal Activity 4. Pt 1-Claire from SPN is in it so that’s fun. I’m not a huge fan of the series but I actually cared about these characters. The dialogue is terrible. The shaky cam is hard to watch. A slightly different formula than the others.
Pt 3-Not my favorite but it was an enjoyable and memorable film.
Pt 2-Good music. Good sets and dialogue. If you don’t like rats, you really won’t like this one. You’ll learn a lot about them. One word of caution though, to modern audiences, the pacing is quite slow. So you have to be very patient with it and just enjoy the ride.
Of Unknown Origin (1983). Pt 1-What a crazy retro film! Wow! This is apparently one of Steven King’s favorite movies. This was a very intense, creepy, funny and strange movie. What an intense battle as the character slowly loses his mind. Two animal deaths here.
Pt 3-Good music, worldbuilding and
ending. Liked the retro feel of this film. Hello, Satanic Panic. Suspenseful and bloody. One of the leads from Hell Fest is in this movie so that was a fun bonus. Worth checking out.
Pt 2-The female leads (we don’t know much about the male leads) got more interesting as the story went on. This was more plot-driven than character-driven and while I usually like depth in my characters, I think that would have detracted from the worldbuilding.
We Summon the Darkness (2019). Pt 1-Great title! I really didn’t think I’d like this film as much as I did. The twist, though very clever, came a bit early into the story. Best laid plans.
Two Sentence Horror Stories. Quota. That creepy virus is like a blend of COVID and zombies. Bit too soon for disease movies, I think. Suspenseful. This one didn’t grab me like the others. Sad. A ho-hum episode in an otherwise good season.
Pt 3-So much guilt and sadness. A heavy film with a good ending.
Pt 2-There’s an interesting story here but it’s muddled by the terrible pacing and a meandering story structure. Too many subplots. Too long for the story it wants to tell. Way too jazzed up to tell a simple story. Predictable.
Fear of Rain (2021). Pt 1-Maybe not the best title. I knew what I was getting 10 minutes into the film. No twists and turns for me. It all felt too heavy handed and obvious. There were some creepy scenes and a frightening portrayal of schizophrenia. Surreal in some parts.

Two Sentence Horror Stories. Imposter. That’s one ugly necklace! Good themes here of staying true to your culture vs selling out but the execution could have been much better.
Two Sentence Horror Stories. El Muerto. Starts with an autopsy of a child, so not for everyone. Sad but interesting episode. Not really creepy. Reminds me of The Sixth Sense. Caught feels from this one.
Pt 5-But honestly, Drag Me to Hell, did that much better.
Pt 4-The bones of a good movie are here and in the hands of another director and writer, it could have been more powerful. That being said, I did like the callback to people making their money in foreclosures off the back of people who can’t pay for their homes.
Pt 3-Scenes that should be scary are edited in a cheesy way; other scenes are slowed down with obvious edits, which ruin the tone and take you out of the scene. Shades of Final Destination.
Pt 2-It doesn’t know what it wants to be. The dialogue is awkward. The message is too obvious; they hit you over the head with it. The movie is called Karma -- not hard to grasp the idea here.
Karma (2019). Pt 1-Not the movie I thought I was getting. This is a very slow, moody drama that has some supernatural elements. Not quite horror in my mind. The ending, which finishes on a funny line, just reinforces the fact that this movie has the wrong tone.
Pt 4-This reminds me a little of the Two Sentence Horror Story episode: Instinct. Great final act and ending.
Pt 3-An unusual and unique film. Cerebral. A bit too focused in the second half on trauma, rape implied along with how people reacted to it. The female lead is one strong character. Very suspenseful ending. Bit of a bleak outlook on men here.
Pt 2-This is proof that you can make a good movie with only a few characters and a small cast. The Toll Man and the worldbuilding with him is both creepy and sad. This movie really grabbed me. I was right there with the characters.
The Toll (2021). Pt 1-Good opening start and music. Authentically awkward dialogue with one really creepy Uber driver. Consistently creepy atmosphere throughout. The story rests on the shoulders of two characters who do a fantastic job.
Pt 2-Profiting from the lives of the workers of your own organization as well as rich women profiting off the lives of other women. What are your dreams worth? Good dark ending. Good themes.
Two Sentence Horror Stories. Essence. Pt 1-A horror story focused on a nail salon -- that’s different. Good creepy atmosphere throughout. The cost of beauty has been done before but not like this. Oh, the body horror of it all!
Pt 2-It leaves the storytelling up to the viewer. It offers no real explanations or worldbuilding. The ending could’ve been better.
Two Sentence Horror Stories. Bagman. Pt 1-Another Breakfast Club meets a horror movie. That was one creepy monster. The characters were interesting. A bit slow but it does pick up.
Pt 2-The principal character is a bit cliché. What is safety and power really worth? Good ending. I like the takeaway: you’re more than your pain, you define who you are, and there is a group for everyone. The bullied are always stronger when they band together.
Two Sentence Horror Stories. Elliot. Pt 1-There should be more trans horror s
Pt 2-The principal character is a bit cliché. What is safety and power really worth? Good ending. I like the takeaway: you’re more than your pain, you define who you are, and there is a group for everyone. The bullied are always stronger when they band together.
Two Sentence Horror Stories. Elliot. Pt 1-There should be more trans horror stories. I’m all for it and the revenge of the bullied. The revenge is a bit extreme here. A good story. Creepy character in the basement of the school. Memorable episode.
Pt 5-Crazy logic and motivation here. Happy I survived the movie and made it all the way through. Not a movie I’d rewatch.
Pt 4-Film drags in the middle as they have to battle quite a few monsters and go through a lot more events than you’d think could be squeezed into that time frame in order to get to the final act.
Pt 3-A bit mean-spirited toward almost all of the female characters here. Gory -- as the title might suggest. Those were some creepy dolls. Cheesy. Good premise, meta. Weird names for some of the characters: Dax, Krill, Lenjamin, Jayme. Interesting maze of rooms.
Pt 2-Not a fan of the obviously sexual relationship between Ashley and the director of the movie she’s in. Not funny given the current climate. I really disliked Ashley’s character altogether not to mention what happened to her.
Blood Fest (2018). Pt 1-Had some good qualities and some bad. Could’ve been a lot better. Good opening scene. Loved the comment, criticism, and analysis of horror movies and why people watch them.
Pt 2-I like that this was focused on a gig worker, that’s unique. Loved the tete-a-tete with herself. Creepy and unsettling even if it is predictable. How much can you trust a stranger especially If you’re working in his house?
Two Sentence Horror Stories. Instinct. Pt 1-A woman-focused horror short. I’d love to see more from this writer and director. This really grabbed me. Women should really trust their instincts and not be afraid to fight.
Pt 3-If you want to see this one, don’t bother renting it -- wait till it’s on a streaming site for free. But I don’t recommend it. Waste of time.
Pt 2-The story structure is off, the pacing is terrible, and the motivation of several characters is strange. I saw the twist coming the second the character was introduced. The ending is anti-climactic. Triggers: forced pregnancy and rape referenced. Mean spirited.
Son (2021). Pt 1-What an opening! Not the movie I thought I would be getting or the movie I wanted to see. Too focused on a child’s painful illness and not enough on the supernatural elements. More emotional than I predicted.
Pt 3-They were able to convey a lot of information and give us a taste of what the season will be like. What an ending! I am curious as to who survives and what happens to the power structure now.
Pt 2-I will say that this pilot sets up an interesting hierarchy, mysterious characters, and the start of what appears to be a chilling season. It’s a very good pilot with good sets.
American Horror Story. Apocalypse. Pilot. Pt 1-Well, this might not have been the best time to check it out, all things considered. Not my forte, at least right now. Tough beginning. Wrenching: the death of four animals -- two horses and two birds – and a torture scene.
Two Second Horror Stories. Little Monsters. Creepy villain. Interesting worldbuilding. Quite a suspenseful episode. I’d love to see more adventures from those kids. Good ending.
Pt 3-The drive to his grandmother’s house reminded me a bit of the drive to the hotel in the Shining. Just a small note -- the subtitles are a bit off in places
Pt 2-It seems like a surreal exploration of the main character’s mind and that’s all, but I need more. The music was good, albeit a bit overpowering at times. The setting was interesting with good cinematography as well.
The Mare (2020). Pt 1-Authentically creepy but meaningless. A confusing mess with no clear takeaway. It was a creepy mindscape so if that’s what you’re looking for, great. There’s no real explanations or character development.
Two Second Horror Stories. Only Child. Good camera work. Creepy music. That is one creepy child -- forget all other evil kids. Good story structure. Chilling story. Oof, that ending. Yikes! Memorable episode.
Now You're Mine Pt 2-This was one hell of a Finnish student film. I am excited to see what comes next for Petra Lumioksa.
Now You’re Mine (2020). Dir. Petra Lumioksa. Pt 1-A moody, chilling piece. Great setting and atmosphere. Slow burn. Lesbian couple. An absolutely chilling story of obsession that I won’t soon forget. Good misdirect. Dead cat with a lingering camera. Loved the main song.
Two Sentence Horror Stories. Tutorial. An interesting take on a home invasion and a video blogger. Chilling. Good twist. Worth checking out.
Pt 4-The explanation is truly ridiculous. I’d avoid this one. Thanks but no thanks.
Pt 3-It just doesn’t make any sense. There’s no cohesion here. It has paper-thin characters that might have been intentional because of the critic on horror, but the lack of depth just drags the rest of the movie down. No story structure. It’s a free for all.
Pt 2-The film doesn’t know what it wants to be. It attempts to dissect horror films, like Scream does, but then this movie veers off in very strange and unnecessary directions. From cops having long monologues with hookers to priests trying to kill gay students.
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight (2020). Pt 1-A muddled mess of a film that tries to tackle too much and fails. The music is absolutely terrible and ruins every scene. In a sex scene, for example, there’s background music that sounds like orcas calling to the sea.
Pt 2-This could have been an interesting exploration of shifters and killers but the worldbuilding here is ridiculous. The jokes are lame and none of it is scary. The SFX, the ending, and the fight scene are terrible. Not worth watching. Nothing new or inventive.
A Creepshow Holiday Special (2020). Pt 1-A good premise that hinges on the characters in the group who are interesting in the beginning but not later on. Anna Camp is in this one.
Pt 3-A good character study of a real predator - every woman’s nightmare. The female lead was one strong character.
Pt 2-The explanation of what’s happening may be unoriginal but there is a twist here that’s hasn’t been explored before. An emotional rollercoaster. You think it’s going one way and then the story swerves.
Twilight Zone (2020). S2 Ep 9. Pt 1-This one was a very chilling and memorable episode. I’m not quite sure how the dynamics of this episode work in conjunction with the real world but that’s not important. The impact of this episode works even if the “how” may be confusing.
Pt 2-What an ending and wrap up! Dark but interesting. Very memorable. Definitely worth checking out!
The Twilight Zone. (2020) S2. Ep. 5. Pt 1-Some real shades of Carrie here and maybe a little bit of The Craft. This episode grabbed me from the beginning. This was a very interesting character exploration.
Pt 5-The ending should've been prioritized.
Pt 4-There was also no explanation as to what happened next to some of the characters. It just ended. The screen time could have allowed for both explanations & a tighter ending instead of a slow start & several scenes that could have been cut.
Pt 3-But without any explanation as to why the killer did it, the movie falls flat. There's no villain monologue and there really needs to be one here. It doesn’t explore deeply enough, doesn’t cut deeply enough. Very suspenseful ending.
Pt 2-What a school environment! Shades of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Very character- focused but a bit too slow. Creepy dreams. Oddly enough, Karen, the mom, was my favorite character. This was a very interesting exploration of the mind of a killer.
Super Dark Times (2017). Pt 1-This one was recommended to me by one of my followers and I finally got around to checking it out. Opens with a dead animal. Yikes. The movie is grounded in realism, from the super annoying characters to the tween speak and the awkward scenes.
Pt 4-The ending was chilling, but I called it right from the beginning of the movie. It’s that predictable. Had a good cast so I was disappointed that the story wasn't stronger. The music is great. Shades of Rosemary’s Baby -- at least to me.
Pt 3-Had potential, could have cut deep and been very creepy and psychological but there’s no dept
Pt 4-The ending was chilling, but I called it right from the beginning of the movie. It’s that predictable. Had a good cast so I was disappointed that the story wasn't stronger. The music is great. Shades of Rosemary’s Baby -- at least to me.
Pt 3-Had potential, could have cut deep and been very creepy and psychological but there’s no depth here. Considering the main character’s attitude about kids in the beginning, the rest of the film is odd. We needed more character development to make that narrative leap.
Pt 2-Very slow with no story structure. Felt like I was in a time loop since the scenes in the middle are all very similar: the main character passes out, has creepy dreams and screams.
Kindred (2020). Pt 1-An atmospheric horror movie with no horror. All the pomp and pretense without the follow through. A strong sense of setting. Pervasive sense of dread with creepy characters but instead of leaning into that, it falls more on drama.
Pt 3-There wasn’t much character development, it was more focused on worldbuilding and creating intrigue, which is perfectly fine for the pilot. The music was good and the setting was interesting.
Pt 2-The tone here wasn’t quite the tone in the trailer but it likely will get darker as it goes along. I’m intrigued by the magic and the creatures we saw here, and I’d definitely like to know more.
Invisible City (2021). Pt 1-This pilot was a good introduction to what appears to be a ecohorror/dark fantasy folklore story and I’m all for that. Thoughts of FernGully are popping into my head.
Pt 4-This has potential but based on the pilot, I don’t think I’ll be checking out the rest of the series.
Pt 3-There’s a bare bones introduction as the school welcomes its new teacher but the episode focuses on the wrong things and doesn’t do any worldbuilding or create mystery. It relies on its cliffhanger ending to draw you in.
Pt 2-The episode does end on a cliffhanger but finding out what happens to some characters isn’t enough of a draw to me. The characters aren’t fleshed out enough to intrigue me. We’re just thrown into the sadistic boarding school and left to figure things out along the way.
Las Cumbres. The Boarding School (2021). Pt 1-Pilot. The pilot in my opinion is a terrible introduction to the series that focused more on drama than on anything supernatural or horror related though that may change later on.
Pt 3-Didn’t scare me at all. This is not a horror movie by any means! Fell flat. The English dubbing is awful -- I’ve never seen worse. Terrible disappointing ending. Not worth your time.
Pt 2-If not, run now because you will be bored straight to sleep. Who needs sleeping pills! The writer should have just done a thesis or a dissertation on the dangers of the internet and not made this movie. Very slow with barely any character development.
H0us3 (2018). Pt 1-With this movie, it’s important to know what you’re getting. If you like movies that are filled with talking and very little action, centered around conspiracy theories, AI, and the dangers of the internet, check it out.
Pt 3-The investigation of the rooms was laborious. Not smart people looking around a room quickly and finding clever clues. Nope that’s not what happens here. The rumbling and locking sounds as things reset, reminds me of Cube.
Pt 2-What happened to Melanie and the concept were both great. However, the rest of the film was not. The characters aren’t fleshed out at all. They’re very dumb and make the worst choices. Cheesy dialogue.
No Escape Room (2018). Pt 1-I should probably start with saying that I love horror and escape rooms, so I had to check this one out. If you can make it to the end, and that is a bit of a feat, you will be rewarded with an absolutely chilling and memorable ending.
Pt 2-Leans into Clarice’s trauma, why? Not sure that’s the right call. Good place to leave off. Interested to know what the story arc will be and where they go from here. Good music.
Clarice (Pilot). Pt 1-Good casting especially for Clarice. Interesting story. Really relies on the aftermath of the 1st movie, Silence of the Lambs. Loving the strong female lead here. Not loving her chauvinist coworkers who silence and undermine her at every turn.
Pt 3-This left me with a sense of hopelessness and futility. Not sure if that was intentional by the director or not.
Pt 2-It was just drama and sex, which is fine, but not a horror movie. Not scary in the least. Predictable. Same old banal horror flick. Nothing new. So slow that paint drying is faster than this movie.
Tentacles (2021). Pt 1-I was so excited for another Into the Dark movie but this one was really terrible. Not worth the time spent watching it. No character building, no real explanation or worldbuilding of the monster and barely any body horror.
Pt 3-Heavy film but meaningful. Speaks to systemic racism and the horrors of slavery. Saying anything more would be giving away the secret. Broken up into three acts. Great final act, a real tour de force at the end with a very suspenseful final act.
Pt 2-While it may be predictable, it doesn’t take away the punch of this film. Emotional, wrenching, powerful. People can be monsters, no need for anything supernatural. Dehumanization, torture, rape, suicide to name a few triggers.
Antebellum (2020). Pt 1-Great cinematography, powerful score, fantastic acting. Everyone really commits to their roles. Something to see. In a sea of terrible cliché-ridden, similar horror films, this one shines like a beacon. Great twist here.
Pt 3-Not a smart person or a cool person or an interesting person with hobbies and aspirations, nope, just "attractive." Wow! There’s only one scene of her at work. Cary Elwes can do way better than this. Why was he even in this movie?
Pt 2-No characterization, all just mood creepiness with no foundation. Slightly misogynistic, at least to me, in the portrayal of women. Everyone just refers to the male character’s girlfriend as attractive.
Don’t Sleep (2017). Pt 1-Very slow and moody with a terribly dumb explanation. Don’t waste your time seeing this movie. Run now! Suicide and rape warning. Very dark and surreal and a bit confusing. Terrible story structure.
Pt 6-I didn’t agree with who made it out of the battle alive. Overall, it was an overly emotional painful ride that I would never go on again. The pilot was interesting but not the series. I will definitely not be watching S2.
Pt 5-The fight was so quick and edited in such a jarring way that it was difficult to see what was happening. Every kick and punch happened at lighting speed from one character to the other. Christina devolved from an interesting character to a caricature.
Pt 4-Lots of triggers here from rape to child abuse. A child gets deformed in a sadistic and cruel way that I cannot forgive or forget. Confused about the choices of several characters. Strong women for the most part. Hated the anticlimactic ending.
Pt 3-There are scenes, especially involving Christina, that we should have seen instead of just heard about and several scenes I wish we didn’t have to see like the transformations. One scene in particular that we should have seen, involved an off-screen character's death.
Pt 2-It's difficult to really keep it together in my mind, much less review it. That being said, there was a good blend here of racism with monsters, which is the core of the show. Good message at the end of who gets to keep magic.
Lovecraft Country S1. Pt 1-Darker than I expected & not as scary as I would have thought. Honestly, this was a bit of a mess with too many storylines, too many characters, a blend of too many things, aliens included.
Pt 3-You want to see more of the world and see what monsters are next. Clever writing for the most part but the dialogue could be better. Inspired idea to make the Brothers Grimm into a parallel of the Winchesters.
Pt 2-I like the idea of profiling monsters and that a monster tells the main character about his birthright. I liked the use of both versions of the song “Sweet Dreams,” the first by Eurythmics and the second by Marilyn Manson. Great ending. This episode really draws you in.
Grimm. Pilot. Pt 1-Good worldbuilding here. Interesting characters and visuals. Good sense of dread and tension. A child is kidnapped -- fair warning. Shades of Supernatural ... but on a bigger scale.
Pt 3-Great POV camera work for the killer. Great intense final battle. I did like the female characters; I just wish some of them made smarter choices. Several spider scenes here ... just saying.
Pt 2-The villains here are barely explained and when all is revealed, it seems like it came out of left field. That being said, it was a rather interesting watch and a unique setting for horror. Good music and one of the iconic scenes in A Nightmare on Elm Street is here.
Deadly Blessing (1981). Pt 1-Not one of my favorite Wes Craven films. A bit of a mess honestly, with a confusing storyline, a terrible ending, too many characters and too many subplots.
Pt 3-Too much moody atmosphere and not enough pay off. Relies too much on body horror. Didn’t connect at all with me. There are much better sci-fi horror movies out there.
Pt 2-No explanation of what these things are or how this happened -- just throws you into the story with only one character who’s fully fleshed out. Happy to see a smart female lead who is studying biology. But she can do way better than that guy. The movie falls flat.
The Beach House (2019). Pt 1-I liked the visual representation of the microbes in the beginning. Otherwise, a tedious and directionless film.
Pt 4-A small point: Amanda’s hair was horrible. Depressing worldview here full of futility, cruelty, suicide and murder. Made for a very particular audience.
Pt 3-Good cinematography but the music is overbearing. The film goes from slow and character driven to intense pretty quickly. Intense prologue in the mountains. Triggers: suicide, so
Pt 4-A small point: Amanda’s hair was horrible. Depressing worldview here full of futility, cruelty, suicide and murder. Made for a very particular audience.
Pt 3-Good cinematography but the music is overbearing. The film goes from slow and character driven to intense pretty quickly. Intense prologue in the mountains. Triggers: suicide, some jokes about suicide and self-harm as well as a dead dog that the camera lingers on.
Pt 2-Not one to see before bed. It felt like I watched a mini-series and not a movie. Didn’t use its time wisely -- too slow and too long. More focused on worldbuilding than characters yet it leaves a lot unexplored in the world it created.
The Empty Man (2020). Pt 1-Good twist and interesting ending but the length of this movie and the story structure took away the impact that the ending might have had. A trip down a philosophical rabbit hole leaving us with loose ends. A movie you’ll want to talk about.
Pt 2-Women standing together against men. Love this idea and I’d love to see these women battling more men. Love the look of this film! Great acting. I totes dig women knowing how to fix a car. Great music! I’d definitely see a feature of this.
Snake Dick (2020). Pt 1-Directed and written by David Mahmoudieh. Now that was an intro! Strong women dealing with chauvinists who are harassing them. Humiliation was a nice touch. Forget vagina dentata, you have snakes. I actually love snakes truth be told.
Pt 2- Great music. High production values. This was a treat to see.
Going Steady (2020). Pt 1-Directed and written by Brydie O’Connor. That’s some imagination she has. Creepy but also sad that she has to live a life of lies. She can’t be who she really wants to be. Great sets, color. I really felt like I time warped back to the 50’s.
Pt 4-Shades of Final Destination here but I feel cheated on what the real answer was. Too trauma-focused. Not what you think you’re getting. Trigger: rape referenced.
Pt 3-This reminds me of the Seinfeld ending with the Good Samaritan Law. An odd title, all things considered. Happy to see a black female lead in a horror movie.
Pt 2-The second twist at the hospital in the end was a decent one and added some real depth to the situation but overall it was a muddled film. More of a spooky thriller than a real horror movie. Was expecting a lot scarier and a lot less of an emotional punch in the face.
Don’t Look Back (2020). Pt 1-An interesting meditation on vengeance and bystanders to assaults who do nothing. But the supernatural elements seemed forced and the final act felt out of place for both the character and the story.
Pt 4-Triggers: bullying, attempted and completed suicide, dead bird.
Pt 3-It focused too much on rampant viruses for my taste. Oddly enough, we only get a quick glimpse of Randall Flagg, and he is why I started this series. Good cast. Very emotional and character-driven though I don’t particularly like all of the main characters.
Pt 2-I went in knowing this, but thought I’d check out the series especially Alexander Skarsgard. *shrug. * If you want to see this series, I would suggest skipping this episode. It lays the groundwork for some of the main characters but it’s not essential.
The Stand (2021). Pilot. Pt 1-It's a bit difficult to watch this pilot since the first episode is very focused on the aftermath of a virus that’s killing almost all of the population and the CDC's unable to contain it. Yikes! Too soon, too real. Unfortunate timing.
Pt 4-A waste of time. Not really a horror movie -- more like a spooky thriller. The tone is all off for horror. Nothing about this was scary.
Pt 3-The ending comes finally, after a movie that feels like it’s 5 hrs. long and as slow as paint drying, but it offers us no real resolution. We still have no idea who the villain was or really why he did it.
Pt 2-Too many flashbacks, not enough important dialogue. So many questions, so many things not explained. Useless dialogue that left out important issues and people, which should have been discussed.
You’re Not Alone (2020). Pt 1-I don’t recommend this one. The characters are barely fleshed out -- you’re thrown right into the story as you to get to know these characters who are only paper thin. Triggers: cat and bird death, suicide while pregnant. Yikes!
Pt 3-Focuses on the wrong things for too long and ignores other avenues that would have proven more emotional and given us a better understanding of the world created here. Child death. Reminds me a bit of Dollhouse.
Pt 2-I didn’t connect with the story as much as I thought I would. A violent and brutal landscape. Not a tight story structure. This one meandered.
Possessor (2020). Pt 1-Had high hopes for this. Great idea but terrible execution. I will say that the cinematography and sets were a treat for the eyes. The characters were a bit one-note, and the ending was sadistic and cruel.
Pt 2-Good use of humor and mystery. I definitely want to find out more. The pilot sets the stage well for the story. Good ending.
Paranormal (2020). Pilot. Pt 1-Haunting music. Good characters for the most part but one in particular is very frustrating. These characters really need to air things out. An interesting story.
Pt 2-That being said, I love the idea of a vampire, werewolf and ghost living together. An inspired idea. Wish the characters and the writing were better. What a cliffhanger ending.
Being Human (2011). Pilot. Pt 1-Bit of a dark start and a dark storyline with humor that doesn’t blend well tonally. The characters have a giant pity party for themselves each thinking they have the worst life. There are definitely better vampire shows out there.
Horrorscope (2019). Directed and written by Pol Diggler. Clever short. Sometimes trailers give away the whole movie and sometimes the trailer is the whole movie. Wow, that twist at the end is like a smack in the face. Didn’t see that one coming.
Pt 2-Not a fun watch in my book. Had to fast forward a lot. Depressing drivel.
Estranged (2020). Pt 1-Odd characters to say the least. This movie is all about the mystery. Nothing else to the story. Very slow. Gets creepier as it goes along. Very disturbing, not worth checking out. Rape warning, forced pregnancy. Torture. Abuse. Twisted stuff here.
Pt 2-Great characters and acting. Interesting H.P. Lovecraft monsters and mythos starting to be revealed here. An all-around exciting and interesting episode that draws you in. What a way to end the first episode.
Lovecraft Country. Pilot. Pt 1-A bit of an odd start. Really felt like I was transported back in time & saw the US like I have never seen it before because I wasn’t born then. Chilling, intense racism that you can feel through the screen. Tense scenes. Hard to watch some of them.
Sirin (2020). Written and directed by John Cheney. That’s one creepy GPS system! I’d love to know more. Simple idea. The ending is a bit too ambiguous for the story but I enjoyed this short all the same.
Pt 2-It was all just torture porn with a morality play stuck on at the end -- probably to make it palpable -- but too little, too late. Not worth seeing the second short in my opinion. Predictable drivel.
Creepshow (2019) 1x03. Pt 1-The first short was great. I loved the characters and the idea. Gotta love the old horror chestnut of pranks gone wrong. Dark but memorable. I’m a real sucker for a good revenge story. The second short I hated.
Pt 3-Predictable -- not a memorable movie. The final fight scene was ridiculous and the villain obvious.
Pt 2-I think for a woke horror flick Black Christmas (2019) nailed it. This film tried to do too much. I was expecting a lot darker and scarier. The characters didn’t speak to me like the original characters and the acting was subpar.
The Craft: The Legacy (2020). Pt 1-Not at all what I’d thought I’d be getting. Doesn’t have the same magic as the original, nor does it feel like a sequel. Not sure where the horror was; more drama than horror and definitely more “woke” than I wanted it to be.
Pt 3-The last act gets a little crazy, too crazy maybe, but overall it was an experience this film and I’m glad I saw it.
Pt 2-That’s the meat of the story as it should be. The hair itself is creepy and the lengths, no pun intended, it will go to. Don’t see this film if you’re going to the hairdresser soon. It gets more intense as it goes on. Unique story and characters.
Bad Hair (2020). Pt 1-Love the commentary here on what it takes to reach the top and the many sacrifices required, as well as loss of identity, commercialism, stealing ideas and women imposing beauty standards on other women. Good stuff. Happy to see all this in horror.
Pt 3-You’ll never look at a creaky closet door the same way. Great music and characterization. Had something to say. Not just scary drivel.
Pt 2-This has some very tense scenes and some creepy ones but at its core, it’s a rather emotional movie. Reminds me a little of Insidious. Loved the exorcist character.
The Closet (2020). Pt 1-Not the movie I thought I was getting based on the trailer but an interesting and powerful movie nonetheless. Is child abuse is one of your triggers? Walk away now.
Pt 4-The whole movie hinges on the male character and what is really happening and since the ending is ridiculous and a real letdown, it begs the question of whether it’s worth it. Features a do-it-yourself ending.
Pt 3-And the daughter is a barely developed character who acts awkwardly in the scenes, as if she’s not quite sure what she’s doing here.
Pt 2-Mounting tension and some unsettling scenes that build but ultimately, the film ends with a whimper not a bang. Instead of writing competent female characters, they write the mother out of most of the movie.
What Lies Below (2020). Pt 1-That title is very similar to What Lies Beneath though the subject matter is very different. Your time can be better spent on other movies. All the film has going for it is an interesting premise and some really creepy scenes.
Pt 3-Don’t agree with the ending and the final scene doesn’t match the tone of the rest of the movie. A more thorough explanation of the toys would have been beneficial. As Christmas horror goes it could be worse, but it could be better too.
Pt 2-Takes a while to get going and it takes forever for the characters to catch up with the viewer about what’s really going on. The characters make some really dumb choices. Some good female leads here but the characters aren’t all that fleshed out.
Toys of Terror (2020). Pt 1-Good title, subpar movie. Basic story, very cheesy. The dialogue could have been a lot better. The acting is just OK. Not scary, no, but creepy, yes especially the song the toys sing. Like a creepy Toy Story here.
I hope that everyone had a good celebration. Starting with Charmed on the weekend and then new horror on Monday. Stay tuned and don't change that channel.
